Mimi Kodheli (born September 11, 1964 in Tirana ) is an Albanian politician ( PS ). Between 2013 and 2017 she was Minister of Defense in the Cabinet under Prime Minister Edi Rama ( PS ). She was the first woman in this position and was replaced by Olta Xhaçka ( PS ) in September 2017 .

education

Kodheli graduated from the University of Tirana with a degree in public finance in 1986 before earning a master's degree in business administration from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in the United States in 2000 . In 2007 she wrote her dissertation in economics at the universities of Verona ( Italy ) and Tirana .

Political career

Kodheli began her political career in 2002 when she became Deputy Mayor of Tirana, Edi Rama . In 2005 she was Prefect of Qark Tirana for one year . In 2007 she was elected to the executive committee of the Socialist Party . In the 2009 parliamentary elections, Kodheli ran as a candidate for the Socialist Party. She was successful and was able to move into Kuvendi i Shqipërisë and was Deputy President of the Commission for Economic and Financial Affairs for the entire legislative period.

In the parliamentary elections on June 23, 2013 , Kodheli was re-elected as a member of the Qark Lezha , and on July 31 it was announced that she would head the Ministry of Defense in the next government cabinet under the Socialist Party leader Edi Rama. She was sworn in before President Bujar Nishani on September 15, and the next day she took up her position as Minister of Defense. She follows Arben Imami ( PD ) in office.

Since the government reshuffle after the elections in summer 2017 , Kodheli has been the head of the parliamentary committee on foreign policy.

Private

Mimi Kodheli is married to Leka Kodheli. The two have a son, Mikel (* 1989).

Kodheli is fluent in English and Italian and has French and Spanish language skills.
