action

First season

Elliot Alderson speaks to an imaginary friend and describes his perception. He lives isolated from the outside world, has a dissociative identity disorder and suffers from severe anxiety , which he tries to suppress by consuming morphine . In his spare time, Elliot hacks people's data and computers. He justifies this by saying that he is protecting them from threats. As an employee of the IT security company Allsafe Cybersecurity in New York, he is responsible for protecting the largest conglomerate in the world, E Corp (always called Evil Corp by Elliot ). He owes this job to Angela Moss, with whom he has been friends since childhood. They met because both Elliot's father, who was his only friend in Elliot's childhood, and Angela's mother developed leukemia and later died after being exposed to toxic waste . Although there were indications that E Corp was aware of the danger to human life from the toxic waste, all efforts by relatives to take legal action against E Corp have so far failed .

One day, Elliot is recruited by Mr. Robot, the leader of an anarchist underground organization called fsociety , to bring down E Corp. The corporation holds so many digitally stored loans that a hacking attack that would wipe those loans out could bring down the global financial system. Together with fsociety , Elliot devises a plan to hack the company. He has to struggle with many adversities. He comes into conflict with Mr. Robot several times. His drug addiction pulls him into a spiral of violence and costs his girlfriend Shayla's life.

He reports feelings of loss of control to his psychiatrist. Elliot also has mental problems; he has forgotten large parts of his past. For example, he doesn't recognize that Darlene from fsociety is his sister. It is only after recognizing Mr. Robot as his father that Elliot finally realizes that he suffers from dissociative identity disorder and that the person he met as Mr. Robot was just a web of his imagination. He realizes that he is Mr. Robot himself, and it was he who founded fsociety and developed the plan to hack E Corp.

Meanwhile, Angela manages to obtain evidence that can be used in court in the toxic waste scandal against E Corp , but she quits her job at Allsafe Cybersecurity . Because of her courageous approach, the management of E Corp noticed her and made her a job offer, which Angela, after some hesitation, accepted.

When fsociety is on the brink of a final hacker attack under time pressure with problems, Elliott meets Tyrell Wellick again, an aspiring manager at E Corp who wants to become the company's new CTO by all means . Wellick, however, was passed over in the personnel decision and dismissed shortly afterwards. Elliot lets Tyrell know about the fsociety plan and the two of them work together.

Three days later, Elliot wakes up with no memory of the collaboration; Tyrell has disappeared. Elliot notes that the plan has been successful and the global financial system is collapsing. The debt-free people around him rejoice and Elliot begins to understand the full scope of the situation. The first season closes with a conversation between the CEO of E Corp and an interlocutor, in which he states that he knows the responsible person and that he is "dealing with them as usual". The interlocutor turns out to be Whiterose , a high-ranking member of the Dark Army hacker group , which fsociety supported.

Second season

Elliot wants to get his life back under control after the drama of the first season. To do this, he moves in with his mother and constructs his “perfect loop”, which is supposed to help him find his way back into an everyday life. But Mr. Robot is still there, trying to convince Elliot to continue with fsociety . Darlene has during which new members for fsociety recruited and continues to E Corp ago. Angela, advancing within E Corp with the help of Phillip Price , continues to gather evidence of the toxic waste scandal.

After one of the members of fsociety , Leslie Romero, was found shot dead, the other members suspect the Dark Army behind it and fear that they will be evicted themselves, which leads to some riots. In addition, the FBI is after them, which increases the pressure on the hackers. Elliot and Mr. Robot have agreed to play chess to decide who should get full control. However, this game does not come to any result. In addition, Elliot still wants to hack the FBI, but he needs Angela because the FBI has taken root at E Corp after the big hack and they can get access to the FBI's data via a femtocell . At the same time, Elliot is supposed to move Ray Heyworth, a man from his neighborhood, from Ray's Darknet page, which he sabotaged, after which he was almost put into a coma. Meanwhile, Agent DiPierro meets Zhi Zhang, China's Minister of State Security, as E Corp also had facilities in China that were hacked by the Dark Army . However, it turns out that Zhi Zhang and Whiterose are the same person, a transgender woman whose dual identity hardly anyone knows. The meeting leads to the Dark Army carrying out an attack on the FBI, which DiPierro barely survives.

When Elliot wakes up again, he is kidnapped by Ray and forced to complete the illegal operation, but betrays him to the FBI. DiPierro suspects that the Dark Army is behind the hack, but almost nobody in the FBI shares their view. Darlene and Angela, who are collecting more and more information about the toxic waste scandal, try to connect the femtocell in the meantime . In a conversation with his psychiatrist, Elliot explains that he knows that he is actually in prison and that he does not, as he has made the viewer believe, live with his mother.

FBI phone calls leaked by fsociety uncover a massive data scandal that violated the privacy of millions of innocent citizens with government authorization. At the same time, Phillip Price is forcing Zhi Zhang to lend money to the currently weak company E Corp. Angela comes under increasing pressure from the FBI. At the same time, this is a search for a member of the Dark Army , Francis "Cisco" Shaw, who, along with Darlene and Agent DiPierro , comes under fire from strangers, probably members of the Dark Army . Cisco is killed, Darlene and DiPierro survive the attack.

Angela, who wants to publish her evidence against E Corp , is kidnapped by Whiterose and persuaded to stop working against the conglomerate . This tries to restore its former position of power by introducing a new credit currency. Elliot uses a ruse to get Mr. Robot to bring him to Tyrell. There he learns about the plans of Mr. Robots, Tyrell and the Dark Army , with which he does not agree. The encounter escalates, with Elliot being shot by Tyrell. Darlene is questioned by the FBI in the meantime and learns that the FBI knows almost everyone involved in the hack due to the riot after Romero's death. It turns out that Romero was not shot by the Dark Army as assumed , but by the "stray bullet of a neighbor". The season ends with Tyrell calling Angela, who was implicated by Whiterose, and telling her what happened to Elliot.

Third season

A flashback shows where Tyrell was at the end of the first season. In the three days that Elliot cannot remember, Tyrell and Mr. Robot plan a new action against E Corp , called Stage 2 . Meanwhile, however, Tyrell has become a prime suspect for the FBI. That is why he is hidden by the Dark Army for days in a forest hut in a barely inhabited area . He later meets with Elliot under the supervision of the Dark Army . Angela drugged Elliot, turning Elliot into Mr. Robot and working with Tyrell on Stage 2 .

The actual third season begins immediately after the end of the second season. Tyrell calls Irving, a used car dealer and Dark Army agent. Irving arrives at Tyrell, who kneels before the bleeding Elliot, whom he shot in an argument earlier at the end of season two. Elliot is then operated on by the Dark Army and wakes up six days later in an apartment where Angela lives. Angela tells him that she wanted to face the FBI but was stopped by the Dark Army . Elliot tries to inform the police about Stage 2 , but refrains from doing so after Angela tells him that the Dark Army will kill her. Instead, he goes in search of Tyrell, whom he can no longer find at his last whereabouts.

Elliot later demands Angela get a job at E Corp to stop Stage 2 . Angela tries to reveal to Elliot that maybe there is a way to undo her parents' deaths. The following night, Angela faces Mr. Robot, whom she brings to Irving and Tyrell to continue Stage 2 . She tells him that she wants revenge on E Corp and therefore supports the Dark Army . It becomes clear that Elliot is working on the success of Stage 2 as Mr. Robot at night , but during the day when Elliot tries to stop Stage 2 .

At the same time, Zhi Zhang and his assistant Grant are at the E Corp Power Plant in Washington Township, where Elliot's father was unknowingly working on a secret project. The project is then visible in the form of a huge machine. Meanwhile, at a conference of the Institute of International Finance , Phillip Price declared that China was waging a currency war on the world. In a subsequent one-to-one conversation between Zhi Zhang and Price, it becomes clear that China wants to occupy the Congo. China should end the currency war and in return the US would not object to the occupation of the Congo before the United Nations. Zhi Zhang's project should then be continued in the Congo. The approval of the United Nations will come later in the season and the relocation of the project to the Congo should begin in a month.

Soon afterwards, thanks to Angela's help, Elliot is employed at E Corp , where he works his way up the hierarchy through hacks and has important company documents distributed throughout the country to protect them from the Dark Army . Since stage 2 plans to destroy all centrally stored data archives of E Corp , he tries to save them through decentralization.

Darlene is visited by Dom and her supervisor Ernesto Santiago because she has not provided any information to the FBI in the past six weeks. The FBI is still trying to find out to what extent Tyrell Wellick is the mastermind behind fsociety . However, Elliot lies to Darlene and denies Wellick's involvement. Darlene secretly installs a trojan on Elliot's PC for the FBI to monitor. Elliot notices this and in return infects the FBI's computers. In this way he finds out that Darlene lives in an apartment provided by the FBI, which he visits. But he doesn't know that Darlene is spying for the FBI. Just before Darlene enters her FBI apartment, Dom warned her. Darlene enters the apartment and manages to dispel Elliot's doubts about her loyalty. Elliot finally admits he suspects he works as Mr. Robot on Stage 2 at night . He asks Darlene to watch him. She learns that Angela and Mr. Robot actually meet at night to work on Stage 2 .

In order not to endanger Stage 2 , Angela obtains Elliot's resignation through Price. At the same time, Angela controls Elliot's state of mind by continuing to stun Elliot, letting Mr. Robot work on Stage 2 . After four days with no memory, Elliot finally enters the E-Corp building, where he no longer works. Elliot realizes that Stage 2 is about to be put into practice and uses a bomb threat to evacuate the building in front of which many anti-E-Corp protesters are gathering. In the crowd, Darlene tells Elliot that she works for the FBI all the time and that Angela works on Stage 2 with Mr. Robot at night . Eventually the demonstrators forcefully break into the E-Corp building. Irving informs Angela (who is in the building) that this is a distraction. In the chaos, Angela carries out instructions from the Dark Army on a specially secured server.

After successful execution, Angela meets Elliot in the building, who wants to know why she drugged him. Although she says nothing to him, Elliot learns where Tyrell is and forwards this to Dom via Darlene. Then he tries to prevent the building from being destroyed. He is stopped again and again by Mr. Robot, but convinces him to help him. Together they stop the threatening explosion. Shortly thereafter, however, Elliot learns that all 71 E-Corp locations, to which he had diverted E Corp data , have been destroyed by explosions and that he did not recognize Whiterose's true plan or prevented it.

Meanwhile, Dom tries to search the reported whereabouts of Tyrell as soon as possible in order to arrest him. Dom's superior Santiago prevents this. Shortly afterwards, Tyrell can be arrested for ignoring Santiago's instructions. However, Tyrell plays the ignorant and identifies Mobley and Trenton as the leaders of fsociety . The latter are kidnapped shortly beforehand by the Dark Army and killed in a way that looks like suicide. The FBI later discovered the bodies.

Elliot - devastated - tells Darlene that he tried everything to stop Mr. Robot and Stage 2 , but nothing helps. Elliot tries to kill himself with a morphine overdose, but is stopped by Trenton's younger brother. Elliot receives an email from Trenton that Romero has kept the keys to decrypt the E-Corp data and that they are now with the FBI. This allows fsociety's initial hack to be reversed. Darlene tries to seduce Dom in order to get the keys, but is exposed. Darlene then tells the FBI about her plan and claims that the FBI was infiltrated by the Dark Army .

In the meantime, Zhi punished Zhang Price for his actions that were not in the interests of China. Price loses its reputation and its position in E Corp . Whiterose / Zhi Zhang doesn't see any use in Elliot either and decides to have him killed. Finally, Elliot and Grant, Zhi Zhang's assistant, meet in a barn. Elliot invents a Stage 3 that Whiterose knows nothing about and infects the Dark Army's computer network . Dom and Darlene are kidnapped by Santiago after Dom uncovered him as a Dark Army contact. Santiago also brings them both to the barn, where he is killed by Irving with an ax. Irving names Dom to succeed Santiago. From now on, she should serve as the FBI's Dark Army mole . Grant kills himself after Whiterose tells him he no longer needs him. Dom grants access to an FBI computer, which gives Elliot the key to undo the initial hack. He also finds out that it was not Romero but Mr. Robot who secured the key.

Angela is eventually taken by the Dark Army to an undisclosed location where Price is staying. Price reveals that he is her real father and tries to convince her that Whiterose has dire plans.

Fourth season

The prologue of the fourth season sets where the third season ended. Angela is still with her biological father, Phillip Price. After learning the truth about Whiterose through him , she is now turned against her. Angela then finds out that the Dark Army is listening to the conversation and is then executed by members of the Chinese hacker group. Phillip Price now finally turns against Whiterose and, ironically, has an emotional breakdown.

A few weeks later, Elliot and Mr. Robot go all out to try to bring down Whiterose . It becomes clear that from now on they appear together permanently, and take turns talking to other characters. The only difference is that from season 4 onwards Elliot no longer speaks to the viewer, but Mr. Robot, who still appears in the form of Edward Alderson. At the same time, Dom is becoming more and more paranoid. The experiences caused by Irving still give her nightmares . After dinner with her mother and a friend Janice, Dom discovers that Janice is the new Dark Army contact who follows Irving. The duo Elliot and Mr. Robot, who are motivated by the death of Angela, continue to work against Whiterose . Darlene cannot cope with the loss of her best friend as well as her brother. She takes drugs and hates everyone, even Elliot.

The duo team up with Phillip Price after Elliot holds him accountable. Phillip Price then tells Whiterose that he will step down as CEO of E Corp , which hinders their plan. At the same time, Darlene and Elliot learn that their mother Magda Alderson has passed away at an advanced age. However, Elliot wants to focus on the fight against Whiterose and Darlene wants to be part of it. After Elliot tells Darlene about the plans, she tells him that she saw Fernando Vera some time ago and that she had already told Elliot about this. Not only does the criminal appear to be back in town, but Mr. Robot has apparently lied to Elliot one more time. However, Elliot assures him that it is not so. It turns out that Elliot has at least one other dissociative identity.

The duo ignores this fact for the time being in order to devote themselves to the more important task: the fight against Whiterose . Darlene tells Elliot that the next step is to hack a woman, Olivia Cortez. In the meantime, Dom is presented with the brutality of Janice and is intimidated. Elliot and Mr. Robot make their way to Olivia; their plan is to seduce them and then steal the data. In doing so, however, Elliot develops an affection for Olivia after they have already had sex .

A flashback shows how Zhi Zhang became Whiterose . White Rose decides Tyrell Wellick as the new CEO of E Corp to appoint. Then Tyrell visits Elliot in his apartment, where Tyrell speaks of a chance against Whiterose . However, the conversation is bugged by the Dark Army . Tyrell and Elliot discover this and then knock the Dark Army member unconscious. Because they think the man is dead, they want to burn him in the forest. However, the man escapes with her vehicle at a gas station in the forest. Elliot, Mr. Robot, and Tyrell must return on foot. Along the way, Tyrell says that he loves Elliot and still admires him. For the first time, it's a two-way friendship between Tyrell and the duo. Then they find the vehicle and the man from the Dark Army , who shoots Tyrell and then kills himself. Doomed , Tyrell says goodbye to Elliot and leaves him so that Whiterose doesn't discover him. In the winter cold forest alone, his chances of survival are very slim.

Dom, who now has chronic nightmares, is still in love with Darlene, although she doesn't admit it. Shortly afterwards she finds the body of the Dark Army man in the forest. Janice tells her to track down Darlene, because Whiterose orders her and her brother to be brought to a safe place until their project is shipped to the Congo.

Until that happens, however, Darlene picks up Elliot from the forest, and the two perform the next step in their hack. Together they gain access to the bank that finances the Dark Army and the headquarters of power, the DEUS group . You get data, but are then discovered by a security guard. After a successful escape, Elliot and Mr. Robot return to Oliva Cortez as they still need her for the hack. When pressed for time, Elliot takes radical advantage of her by giving her drugs and forcing her to cooperate. She tries to kill herself by suicide, but is rescued by Elliot. Since Elliot no longer needs them, they part ways.

In the meantime, Dom kidnaps Darlene as she was ordered by Janice. Dom is supposed to kill Darlene because she is now useless, but because of her affection for her she is unable to carry out the act. When Janice arrives at the apartment herself and wants to shoot Darlene, Darlene deletes her smartphone and thus destroys any possibility for Janice to get to Elliot. Janice ties Dom and Darlene and demands Darlene to restore their phone data. Because Darlene refuses, Janice Dom stabs a knife in the lungs and leaves the knife stuck so that Dom does not immediately bleed to death. Janice also shares that a team has already kidnapped Dom's family and everyone would be killed if the data is not restored. Finally, at a favorable moment, Dom arrives at one of the kidnappers' pistols and shoots all Dark Army members in the room. Darlene and Dom split up after Dom calls the FBI and remains wounded. Her family has since been brought to safety by another criminal with whom Dom had a deal.

Fernando Vera, who is now back in New York with his gang, dreams of taking New York at the side of Elliot. After seeing Elliot seeing his former therapist Krista again, he kidnaps her. From her he gets Elliot's file and access to his past. His plan is to break Elliot, then rebuild him and pull him over to his side. For this manipulation, he kidnaps Elliot. At first he thinks Mr. Robot is the key to Elliot's feelings, but then realizes that it is Krista who can achieve it. He forces Krista Elliot to reveal what really happened: Elliot learns that Edward Alderson, his father, sexually abused him as a child. He wasn't his only friend as a child, as assumed. This was Mr. Robot back then, who in Elliot's head looked like Edward even as a child. Elliot must also learn that his post-traumatic stress disorder, social phobia, substance abuse, delusions, dissociative identity disorder, anxiety, hatred of humanity and society, his depression, sleep disorders, his mania, as well as his dissociative amnesia and the Existence of Mr. Robot, created by his abuse. Vera is now trying to be a friend to Elliot. The moment before Elliot overflows on his side, Krista kills Vera to stop the manipulation. Then both escape. Elliot meets his younger self, which leads him to a museum, where he played hide and seek as a child. There he finds a key to his nursery. Elliot realizes he has fought against his father, his monster. Finally, Mr. Robot appears and apologizes for everything. Elliot admits that Mr. Robot is just a fantasy to have a father he never had. An hour before the DEUS group meets, Elliot is devastated.

Mr. Robot, his mother Magda and the younger self meet in Elliot's head. They don't agree on whether to finally tell Elliot the truth because he hasn't woken up yet. But you are sure that Darlene can wake him up.

Meanwhile, Mr. Robot stands by Darlene's side to overthrow the DEUS group . The group should meet in minutes to officially appoint Price's successor, Tyrell Wellick. Zhi Zhang, however, thinks Price and Elliot are planning something and therefore only meets with Price while the rest of the group meets at a different location. Mr. Robot and Darlene use Tyrell's calendar to find out the whereabouts of the DEUS group , to which Darlene is leaving alone. Since Mr. Robot needs information from Zhi Zhang, he calls Price on his cell phone. Zhi Zhang answers the call and speaks to Mr. Robot. Zhi Zhang reveals that he can take Mr. Robot to a place where Angela is still alive. This reappears Elliot's person. He refuses when he sees a new video from fsociety . The hacking group managed to publish the identities of all DEUS members. Panicked by the publication, DEUS members began to flock to the streets, where they were stopped by the press and the curious. This gives Darlene her phone numbers, which she can use to bypass the two-factor authentication of her bank accounts. Zhi Zhang also panics and leaves the original meeting place with Price, who like Zhi Zhang has now realized and truly enjoys the extent. Ultimately, Zhi Zhang is also hacked and Price enrags him with a speech. Zhi Zhang shoots Price on the street and flees while the DEUS group has lost all of its fortune.

After this last hack to bring down the most powerful group in the world, Dom discharges himself from the hospital, but is under observation by the FBI, which she does not trust. Dom suffers from the fact that she cannot have any contact with her family. Darlene looks for her and persuades her to leave everything behind with Elliot and her. Darlene and Dom separate from Elliot and continue their journey together. Darlene shows Dom how she distributes the DEUS Group's money equally to all people in the world. She tells Dom that they want to fly to Budapest together. Shortly before departure, Dom meets Irving at the airport, who is selling his book there, which he wrote during the third season. He tells her that the Dark Army is no longer interested in her. Immediately before departure, Dom decides not to fly to Budapest with Darlene, but to stay with her family. Darlene and Dom split up. Before checking-in, Darlene had a panic attack and ran to the toilet. At the very last moment, Dom changed his mind and ran to the check-in himself. In the end she flies alone to Budapest without knowing where Darlene is.

A short look back then shows how Zhi Zhang slipped into the role of Whiterose after killing Price and lured the FBI into an ambush to arrest him. Together with Dark Army mercenaries, Whiterose drives to the E Corp Power Plant near Washington Township. Elliot, who had previously separated from Darlene and Dom, also arrives there. The nuclear power plant looks abandoned. He infects the control systems with malware to stop Whiterose's project . After this succeeds, Elliot realizes that all of the local people are dead. He is discovered by the Dark Army and taken to Whiterose's room. Whiterose finally explains that she created a machine to make the world a better place. She tries to convince Elliot of her mission, but he makes it clear to her that this is hopeless. An alarm goes off and Whiterose explains that the machine has started and that this will end in a meltdown. Elliot has a chance to stop this by playing an old adventure game on a computer in the room. Whiterose eventually kills himself. Elliot tries his best, but what appears to be an explosion.

Elliot wakes up in his apartment at 11:16 am. But now everything appears modern, happy and full of joie de vivre. Elliot is the CEO of Allsafe , he is supposed to marry Angela the next day, his father still lives and works in his “Mr. Robot, "Tyrell is the CEO of F Corp and Whiterose is a wealthy, generous woman. However, Elliot has a headache and the beautiful world is shaken by earthquakes several times. After the workday, Elliot comes home, where he sees himself as the viewer has known him throughout the series.

The viewer then learns how the previous depressed Elliot woke up in an empty parking lot after the scene in the nuclear power plant, where the nuclear power plant should actually be. The previous Elliot explores this world, where he meets his mother and Angela's parents. Fearing his father, he asks his mother if he was abused as a child, but his mother says they would never do anything like that. The previous Elliot also realizes that Darlene does not appear in any family photo and that he exists as a successful and happy person in this world. Elliot goes into his apartment and hacks himself, discovering drawings that show the previous Elliot, fsociety and Darlene. At that moment, the Elliot from this other world comes into the apartment. Both exchange ideas, with the "new" Elliot claiming that the previous Elliot was just a fantasy of his. Elliot is talking to the audience again, which the other person notices too. Finally, the previous Elliot wants to flee. Another earthquake occurs, with the happy Elliot falling and seriously injured. The previous Elliot telephones Angela in front of the seriously injured Elliot and sees the chance to replace the successful and happy Elliot. He kills him and puts him in a moving box. On the street he is approached by Dom, who is a policewoman in this world, about a parking ban. Thanks to another earthquake, Elliot is able to escape.

Elliot arrives at the beach where he wants to marry Angela. But there is only a group of people with masks from fsociety . Mr. Robot appears and tells Elliot about the big secret: Elliot is not the real Elliot Alderson, but another created identity of him - just like Mr. Robot himself. The world he sees now is just an invention, to protect the real Elliot.

Elliot initially doesn't accept this, but then meets Angela, who tells him that he is the mastermind and not the real Elliot. The mastermind then meets a fictional Krista, who has the task of the other identities - Mr. Robot, Elliot's mother and Elliot's younger self - to make it clear to the mastermind that he is not the real Elliot. In direct address, she also informs the viewers of the series that Mr. Robot was created to protect the real Elliot, the mother to punish Elliot, the younger self to not accept the abuse, and the mastermind, to focus the wrath of Elliot. The mastermind (who the viewer has watched throughout the series and who was created at the beginning of season 1) has taken complete control of Elliot Alderson. Now it is time to let go of this control again.

After looking back a few times, the mastermind wakes up in the hospital. Darlene explains to him that everything really happened: Many people are dead, the nuclear power plant partially destroyed and the DEUS group at the end. The mastermind realizes, however, that he is not the real Elliot and now has to let go. Darlene admits that she suspected it and that he couldn't be the real Elliot. She had already suspected it when they started fsociety . But she never said anything because she finally got close to her brother, which was never the case before. She had previously no longer known how to get access to her mentally ill brother and had therefore disappeared. But she wanted to change that and therefore returned (at the beginning of the first season).

Finally, the viewer sees all four identities (the mastermind, Mr. Robot, Elliot's mother and his younger self) in a movie theater, where all of the mastermind's important moments are replayed as a film like memories. Then the real Elliot Alderson wakes up, but the viewer cannot see him. Darlene looks at him and realizes that her real brother is back.

production

development

Sam Esmail is fascinated by the hacker scene and has wanted to make a film about it for 15 years. Experts were also consulted during production in order to be able to realize a realistic picture of hackers.

The series was originally conceived as a film by Sam Esmail and is his first television work. USA Network ordered the pilot in July 2014 and nine more episodes in December 2014. Work in the Writers Room began in January 2015 and filming began on April 13, 2015 in New York. On the day of its television premiere, the series was extended by a second season, also with ten episodes.

Esmail emphasizes that the series focuses on the characters' plot and feelings, rather than excessive CGI effects or unrealistic depictions of hacking.

Influences

The Egyptian Esmail was inspired by the hacker culture and the Arab Spring , in which young people brought about a change in the political system through social media . Esmail has also confirmed several other influences on the series, such as the films American Psycho , Taxi Driver , Uhrwerk Orange , and Matrix . The 1999 thriller film Fight Club served as inspiration for Elliot, who suffers from dissociative identity disorder . Fight Club was also an influence on the anti- consumerist attitude of the characters with which they try to take action against "the system". Viewers also noticed the parallels in the storylines of the two works, in which an attempt is made to create a new world order by completely erasing credit records. Esmail stated that he had tried by background music with the song Where Is My Mind? , which was used at the end of Fight Club to make it clear to the audience that the film was the inspiration for the series.

Taxi Driver also influenced the role of the protagonist as the narrator; Loose deals for music; Blade Runner for character development; and Breaking Bad for the story arc.

Locations

Mr. Robot was shot in New York City . One of the filming locations was Coney Island , where the headquarters of the hacker group fsociety was located. Since there was no way for the crew to close Times Square for filming, it was shot there at night shortly before the Independence Day weekend in order to ensure an area as deserted as possible.
