action

The focus of the action immediately after World War II in the southern United States is the white McAllan family and the African American Jackson family.

The white McAllans have only recently moved to the area and have put all of their savings into a farm, some of which is run by small tenants. Because they were betrayed in planning their move, the McAllans and their two young children live in a run-down farmhouse with no electricity or running water. Henry McAllan has big plans for the fields on the Mississippi, which are repeatedly turned into a muddy desert by frequent rains. His wife Laura is beginning to lose faith in her husband's dreams, however, as the modernization of the company is only progressing slowly and she has to deal with her disgruntled and racist father-in-law Pappy on a daily basis.

The African American Jacksons are among the tenant farmers that the McAllans took over along with the farm. As so-called sharecroppers, they have been cultivating the land for generations without ever being granted ownership rights. Hap and Florence Jackson dream of owning a piece of their own farmland somewhere else. They live with their underage children, who regularly have to work in the fields, in far worse circumstances than the McAllans.

When Henry's brother Jamie McAllan and Hap's son Ronsel Jackson return from the war, this becomes a challenge for both families, as a cautious friendship develops between the two veterans as a result of similar experiences in Europe in the fight against the Germans. At first, Jamie only takes the young black guy into town on the back of his pickup truck, but soon he insists that Ronsel sit next to him on the front bench. Ronsel crouches every time another car comes towards them, but one day Pappy recognizes him.

Ronsel had fought as a sergeant in a tank battalion of the Black Panthers and had met a woman during his deployment in Germany whom he had to leave behind, not knowing that he was pregnant. Jamie, on the other hand, was a bomber pilot who almost died had it not been for a black comrade to save him. Since then, Jamie has suffered from recurring episodes of post-traumatic stress disorder , to which his utterly uncomprehending father, Pappy, reacts with clear contempt.

Jamie and Ronsel find it difficult to integrate into everyday life, and they are increasingly questioning the realities of their prejudiced homeland. You both have changed; the world to which they return has remained the same. So Pappy continues to call the homecomer Ronsel " nigger " when he no longer wants to use the back door. Ronsel and Jamie are finally confronted with the brutal excesses of racial discrimination when Pappy finds the photo of Ronsel's lover and their child in the pickup truck - evidence of what Pappy sees as unacceptable “racial disgrace”.

production

Literary template

The literary source for the film comes from Hillary Jordan

The film is based on a 2009 novel by Hillary Jordan . The book is about racism and well-kept secrets of a white and an African-American family in the southern United States in the 1940s. The novel is told from the perspective of six characters, whose lives often show parallels despite their different social positions. Like the novel itself, the book title is inspired by the family history of Jordan's maternal line. Her mother and grandparents lived on a farm in Lake Village, Arkansas , with no running water or electricity. They called the farm Mudbound , which translates as “ chained to the mud”: After rains, the roads were flooded and impassable, so that the farm residents were stuck “in the mud ” for days and could not escape .

Staff and funding

Directed by Dee Rees , who co- wrote the script based on Jordan's novel with Virgil Williams . As in the book, Rees tells the story from six perspectives. The director says of her film and its contemporary message: "It reveals the race as an economic construct and exposes the fact that we are not only connected to each other, but also to our history." Dee Rees continues: "There is no ' then 'or' in the future ', there is only the now. Everything is now. We cannot deny our history and say we are a product of our time. We are the times and we decide what kind of nation we will be. "Leading actress Carey Mulligan comments on the location of the story during and after World War II:" It was a fascinating time in history that I never really thought about. War has been a catalyst for social change throughout history. The idea of black men fighting and dying for their country and then returning to a society that has not changed at all and was just as contemptible and unacceptable was so bizarre that I really thought about it ... that was really interesting. "

The film was co-funded by MACRO and Zeal Media. The producers of the film are Cassian Elwes , Chris Lemole and Tim Zajaros from Zeal Media, Charles D. King and Kim Roth from MACRO, Sally Jo Effenson and Carl Effenson . The film also received the Dolby Family Sound Fellowship, a grant that allows filmmakers to round off their sound design with Dolby Atmos .

reception

Reviews

So far, the film has won over 97 percent of Rotten Tomatoes critics and received an average rating of 8.2 out of a possible 10 points. At the 2017 Golden Tomato Awards , the film came third in the Best Drama category .

Peter Debruge of Variety says the film is an ode to everything that we share - the struggles of the people of all shared desire for success and the creation of a better world for our children - is, and the film that a fucking accusation that stand in the way of such progress. Debruge explains that the film captures an unusual amount of detail from its source material, including the language itself. Dee Rees preserves Hillary Jordan's basic idea of telling the story across six different characters, three from each of the two families. In this way, he put the figures, despite their different social positions in the 1940s, all on roughly the same level. Rees allows each of these characters to express their deepest thoughts, so Debruge, but not Pappy, whose racist attitude, however, is loud and clear. As in the films The River and Places in the Heart , the fight for survival is particularly evident in the film at a moment when the farmers are trying to save their crops, and Debruge sums up that Mudbound tells a story of fighters, regardless of whether they are against their country Defending Hitler or just trying to get food on the table at home. Rees not only shows what distinguishes the characters from one another, but also celebrates their similarities in his film. Finally, on Mary J. Blige , Debruge remarks that she is so immersed in her role that the viewer can easily forget that one is looking at a pop star.

Adrian Daub from Zeit Online thinks that the director delivers rich, beautiful images in which the cars, tractors and radios lose themselves in front of the overwhelming southern sky, always on the brink of a thunderstorm, and with the downpour the eponymous mud comes: "Gospel, Faith, tradition and the violence of nature, we are told, dominate this area and have always dominated it. ”Daub goes on to say that Mudbound wants to conscientiously let both sides have their say, this double perspective with five (sic!) Figures that Only the audience could comment on the story off-screen: “The characters may share the same film, but they are unable to reflect on their own position and that of their counterparts.” Daub sums up what American films are about race to Get Out in spring 2017 probably regard as the last film of the Obama era, Mudbound , however, was probably already a film for the US by Donald Trump .

Anna Wollner from Deutschlandfunk Kultur describes the film as an unusual kaleidoscope that tells a lot about the mood and tension in the country at a time when the poor white man is afraid of losing his few privileges to his black neighbors: “Very slowly with a furious cast of Mary J. Blige , Carey Mulligan and Jason Clarke , the film unfolds its story about subliminal and open racism and is a lesson about America today. "

Shortly after the 2017 Academy Awards, The New Republic's Tim Grierson and Will Leitch brought up Garrett Hedlund as Best Supporting Actor and Mary J. Blige and Carey Mulligan as Best Supporting Actress for the following year's awards ceremony . Andreas Wiseman from screendaily.com also recognized this potential and emphasized the strong acting performances of the three, but also of Jason Mitchell and Rob Morgan . Sabienna Bowman thought a nomination for best film possible.

Peter Richter of the Süddeutsche Zeitung also says about the Oscar chances of the film that the talented, young, black and openly homosexual filmmaker Dee Rees has an interesting exceptional case in the largely white men and, more recently, largely from the topics of power and sex and abuse dominated American film business. Richter goes on to say that if there were also an Oscar category of its own for really pervasive, terrifying Ku Klux Klan disgust, Jonathan Banks would certainly have it for his role: "In other words, it's going to be really tough ."
