Natters is a municipality in Tyrol ( Austria ) with 2075 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020). The place belongs to the Innsbruck-Land district and the Innsbruck judicial district .
In terms of traffic, Natters is connected to Innsbruck by the Brenner federal road and the Stubaitalbahn . The philosopher Wolfgang Stegmüller came from Natters.
geography
Natters is located on a low mountain range south-west of Innsbruck in a hollow. A terrace forms a natural border with the neighboring municipality of Mutters to the south . The densely built-up village center is quite rural. Subsequently, new settlement areas have formed, due to strong population growth due to the proximity to Innsbruck. In Natters there is a department of the Tyrolean Regional Hospital, mainly for pulmonology .
The nearby moorland Natterer See is a popular local recreation area. Like many lakes in the area, it was artificially created at the end of the 15th century. In the fishing book of Emperor Maximilian I , it was called "Ödenhauser Weiher". It later dried out, was rebuilt in 1930 and is now used for bathing and fish farming.

Natters is first mentioned in 1138 in the tradition book of the Beyharting monastery as " Nateres " and a little later, in the years 1148–1156, in the tradition book of the Weihenstephan monastery as " Nâters " or " Natris ". Finds from the Bronze and Iron Ages show early settlement of the area. Roman traces have also been found. The Bavarians immigrated in the 6th century. Between the Brennerstrasse and the Sill stood the Sonnenburg , first mentioned in 1253 , which for a long time was the district court for the middle Inn Valley and was replaced by Wilten Abbey . In the 16th century, Emperor Maximilian I had a summer residence in Natters, which is now the municipal office or residence Waidburg . In 1809 Natters was the fighting area in the Tyrolean freedom struggles . In the middle of the 19th century, Natters developed into a summer resort. The community experienced an upswing with the Stubaitalbahn built in 1904 and the Olympic Games of 1964 and 1976, which were held in the area.

The coat of arms was awarded to the municipality of Natters on November 20, 1972. As a talking coat of arms, it symbolizes the former Sonnenburg , which was a well-known and often mentioned court seat. The Sonnenburg stood on the former Sonnenburger hill, which was demolished in the course of the Brenner motorway construction (motorway exit Innsbruck-Süd).
