New Opera Vienna
The Neue Oper Wien is a free opera group without its own venue, which was founded in 1990 in Vienna ( Austria ) by the French director Olivier Tambosi . The musical director has been Walter Kobéra since 1991 , he has also been artistic director since 1993 .
philosophy
The most important goal of the Neue Oper Wien is to reduce or eliminate the distance between the stage and the audience in its productions, thereby creating the greatest possible immediacy and closeness between all those involved. In this way, contemporary music can be presented and perceived as a matter of course. The success of this work has made the Neue Oper Wien one of the top addresses in the field of contemporary opera for publishers and artists alike.
Performance venues
Without its own venue and without a permanent ensemble, the Neue Oper Wien wants to remain unencumbered and flexible, its credo is not only the development of new worlds of sound, but also new spaces. With the concept of choosing the houses after the operas, the rooms become players, the stage sets are closely adapted to the spatial requirements, the special acoustics are tested and developed. In this way, the Neue Oper Wien u. a. the Odeon , the Semperdepot , the Bank Austria Halle im Gasometer , the Remise, the Art Nouveau theater or the Alte Werft in Korneuburg have been opened up for music theater.
The Neue Oper Wien works regularly with the Theater an der Wien , the Wiener Festwochen and the Bregenz Festival . From 2005 to 2007 she was a guest at the International Chamber Opera Festival in Zwolle / NL . The Neue Oper Wien also works regularly with the MÜPA-Palace of Arts Budapest , Wien Modern and the Haydn Bozen Foundation.
repertoire
Uncompromisingly, only works from the 20th and 21st centuries are on the program: world premieres, Austrian premieres, new discoveries and rediscoveries. In addition, the Neue Oper Wien also regularly commissions Austrian and international composers.
The Neue Oper Wien has had a significant impact on musical life in Vienna with numerous world premieres. With her performance of Billy Budd in 1996, she was one of the triggers for the Viennese enthusiasm for Benjamin Britten that continues to this day . The first scenic implementation of Helmut Lachenmann's Das Mädchen mit den Schwefelhölzern in 2003 in coproduction with the Wiener Festwochen caused an international sensation.
In 2009 the Neue Oper Wien announced the Gerhard Schedl music theater competition together with the music publisher Doblinger and the BNP Paribas Foundation . The winning work Bruder Woyzeck - Traumfalle by Markus Lehmann-Horn premiered in April 2012 in Vienna.
In 2014 the Neue Oper Wien performed Manfred Trojahn's opera Orestes .
Peter Eötvös dedicated his opera Paradise Reloaded to Walter Kobéra and the Neue Oper Wien .
In 2020 the Neue Oper Wien discovered a new genre for itself and, together with Marco Di Sapia, developed a short film that is intended to introduce the world of contemporary music: I love modern so much - Viennese humor meets contemporary music .
