Nolana arenicola is a plant type from the genus Nolana in the family of the nightshade family (Solanaceae).

description

Nolana arenicola is an annual plant up to 45 cm high and 30 to 40 cm wide . It is covered with glandular trichomes . The loosely branched, prostrate, tubular branches measure 2 to 4 mm in diameter, the internodes are 1 to 5 cm in length.

The leaves are ovate or broadly lanceolate and 1 to 3 cm long. The leaf blade suddenly narrows to the obliquely rounded, blunt or tapering base and turns into a 1 (rarely up to 2) cm long flower stalk . The leaves are flat or narrowly bent back, slightly ribbed and succulent.

The slender flower stalks are 0.5 to 2 cm long and become rigid and bend back with age. The calyx is 1 to 1.5 cm long at flowering time and measures 3 to 4 (rarely up to 5) mm in diameter. It is torn once or twice, the five unevenly shaped calyx tips are spatulate and stand upright, on the fruit they are noticeably enlarged and 8 mm long. The crown is blue, 2 to 2.5 (rarely up to 3) cm long, the corolla tube is about 5 mm long. The inside is densely tomentose.

The about 2 to 7 mm long collective fruit consists of five larger and five to ten smaller nuts . All partial fruits are angled and wrinkled. The ovary bulge is enlarged on the fruit and 3 mm high.

distribution

The species is endemic to southern Peru and occurs between the departments of Arequipa and Tacna .

Systematics

Phylogenetic studies showed that the species is most closely related within the genus to Nolana adansonii (also from Peru) and Nolana galapagensis (from the Galápagos Islands ). These species form a monophyletic clade .
