Oberndorf an der Melk is located on the Melk River in the Mostviertel in Lower Austria.
The area of the market town covers 42.78 square kilometers. 14.79 percent of the area is forested.

history
In ancient times, the area was part of the Noricum province .
Around 1200 it was founded by the Knights of Schönleiten (the earthworks of the castle in the Rotte Lehen-Keller still preserved).
On January 1, 1966, the community of Griesdorf bei Oberndorf was incorporated into Oberndorf an der Melk.
Population development
According to the results of the 2001 census, there were 2937 inhabitants. In 1991 the market town had 2853 inhabitants, in 1981 2811 and in 1971 2750 inhabitants.

Culture and sights
- Parish church: changed to Baroque style from 1630 to 1645; The church tower and choir still point to the originally late Gothic church building; the furnishings are partly from the 17th and 18th centuries. The church is dedicated to St. Aegydius and the Apostle Thomas.
- Weichberger headquarters
- Pfoisau-Kogel: Not far from Oberndorf in the Pfoisau Rotte is the so-called Pfoisau-Kogel, an earthworks. In the Middle Ages there was a castle (named in 1258), a chapel was built there in 1423, later it became a church with a cemetery, which existed until Josephinism. Around 1900 a goblet was found in the field, which is now on display in St. Pölten.

In 2001 there were 88 non-agricultural workplaces, and according to the 1999 survey there were 262 in agriculture and forestry. According to the 2001 census, the number of people in employment in the place of residence was 1,400. The 2001 employment rate was 48.62 percent.
