At the XXVI. At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta , four table tennis competitions were held. The venue was the Georgia World Congress Center.

Competition mode

In principle, the mode of play has not changed since the 1988 Games :

  • In the men’s and women’s singles, eight preliminary round groups with four participants each will be played in the everyone against everyone mode. The first reach the round of 16, where it continues in the knockout system .
  • In the double competitions, eight preliminary round groups, each with 4 pairings, are played in the mode everyone against everyone. The first are qualified for the quarter-finals and continue to play here in the knockout system.
  • The bronze medal is played. So far, third place and fourth place have received a medal.

German participants

From Germany, Jörg Roßkopf , Peter Franz , Nicole Struse and Jie Schöpp were automatically qualified via the position in the ITTF world rankings . In the European qualifying tournament for the individual competition in Manchester, Olga Nemes won a ticket while Steffen Fetzner failed here. In the qualifying tournament for doubles in Nantes, Roßkopf / Fetzner , Schall / Struse and Nemes / Schöpp held their own ; Wosik / Franz were eliminated.

Performance of the German participants

Jörg Roßkopf and Nicole Struse came the furthest of all European participants.

Men's singles

Roßkopf won unbeaten in group E ahead of Hiroshi Shibutani (Japan), Lo Chuen Tsung (Hong Kong) and Guillermo Munoz (Mexico). In the second round he defeated Patrick Chila (France), in the quarterfinals Kim Taek-soo (South Korea). Then he lost in the semifinals against Liu Guoliang . In the bronze medal match, he beat the Czech Petr Korbel 3-1.

Peter Franz only came third in Group C and thus missed the last sixteen. He won against Dukhail Alhabashi (Kuwait) and lost to Jean-Michel Saive (Belgium) and Vasile Florea (Romania).

Men's doubles

Roßkopf / Fetzner remained unbeaten in Group E, leaving Karl Jindrak / Werner Schlager (Austria), Johnny Huang / Gideon Joe Ng (Canada) and Hugo Hoyama / Giuliano Flint Peixoto (Brazil) behind. Then they reached the semi-finals after defeating Damien Éloi / Jean-Philippe Gatien (France). Here they lost to the Chinese Lu Lin / Wang Tao . They lost to Lee Chul-seung / Yoo Nam-Kyu (South Korea) in the bronze medal match .

Ladies singles

Nicole Struse prevailed in Group G with three wins over Taeko Todo (Japan), Tamara Boroš (Croatia) and Sonia Touati (Tunisia). In the round of 16 she defeated Tu Dai Yong (Switzerland) 3-1, after which she had no chance against future gold medalist Deng Yaping (China) 3-0.

Jie Schöpp could not qualify for the round of 16. She only came in second in Group I after victories over Jelena Timina (Russia) and Funke Oshonaike (Nigeria) and a defeat against Kim Hyon-hui (North Korea).

Ladies doubles

The two German doubles took second place in the opening groups and were therefore eliminated.

Nemes / Schöpp placed in group B ahead of Andrea Holt / Lisa Lomas (Great Britain) and Berta Rodriguez Olate / Sofija Tepes Cancino (Chile) and behind Liu Wei / Qiao Yunping (China).

Schall / Struse won in Group G against Gerdie Keen / Mirjam Hooman (Netherlands) and Alessia Arisi / Laura Negrisoli (Italy).

useful information

It was the third Olympic Games in which 20 athletes took part. They were thus represented at all previous Olympic Games. Valentina Popovová was one of those players. She was invited by wildcard every time and always started for a different nation: 1988 USSR , 1992 CIS and 1996 Slovakia . The 30-year-old Brazilian Claudo Kano had already qualified to participate. Shortly before the tournament started, he was killed in a traffic accident in Sao Paulo. Dr. Peter Pfister from Fürstenfeldbruck was the main referee in the final of the women's doubles.
