Werner Schlager (born September 28, 1972 in Wiener Neustadt ) is an Austrian table tennis player .

Career

Schlager began playing table tennis when he was five. He found his training partner in his father ( Rudolf Schlager ) and his brother ( Harald Schlager ), who was also a top Austrian player. After numerous very good placements in single and double tournaments, as well as with his team SVS Niederösterreich , he became individual world champion in Paris in 2003 . He was the first Austrian since Richard Bergmann in 1937 and the last non-Chinese to date (February 2020) to succeed. At the same time, this also meant jumping to the top of the world rankings.

In 2003, Schlager was voted "Most Popular Foreign Sportsman" in China. In Austria he received the award for Austrian Sportsman of the Year and was honored with his own postage stamp - it is the first Austrian postage stamp dedicated to a living person (excluding heads of state).

Schlager is known as a clever tactician and dangerous server. He often scores points as a result of his varied serves through fast topspins from forehand and backhand close to the table. Werner Schlager is a Butterfly contract player and is currently (2008) playing with the butterfly blade “W. Schlager Carbon (FL) ”. He plays a Butterfly Tenergy 05 (2.1 millimeter sponge thickness) on the forehand and backhand. In 2008 he took part in the Olympic Games for the fourth time, but lost in the team competition together with Chen Weixing and Robert Gardos in the battle for the bronze medal.

In 2009 Schlager set up a table tennis center in Schwechat near Vienna, the Werner Schlager Academy . This training center was awarded the contract to hold the 2013 European Table Tennis Championships . It filed for bankruptcy in 2015 and ended operations in 2016.

On September 25, 2003, Österreichische Post AG issued a multi-colored postage stamp with a picture of Werner Schlager and the text "Table tennis world champion 2003" at a face value of EUR 0.55 ( Michel catalog no. 2698). The circulation of the postage stamp, which was printed in countersink of 50 pieces using halftone gravure, was 700,000 pieces. On this stamp the text was also printed in Chinese characters. Ms. Renate Gruber designed this stamp. Cutted black prints of this stamp that are not valid for postage exist.

On the first day of this stamp a special postmark was used with a picture of a table tennis racket and a table tennis net as well as the text "Werner Schlager Tischtennis Weltmeister 2003, 09/25/2013 1150 Vienna".

On September 26, 2003, a special stamp with the picture of Werner Schlager and the text "Werner Schlager Table Tennis World Champion 2003, SVS Lower Austria, September 26, 2003 * 2320 Schwechat" was used.
