The Opel Signum was a vehicle for the automobile manufacturer Opel that was produced from February 2003 to July 2008. It was based on the platform of the Vectra C . It was assembled in the main Opel plant in Rüsselsheim in Hall K170, which was built in 2002.

With a comparable overall length, the Signum offers more space in the rear than the Vectra sedan thanks to the longer wheelbase of the Vectra station wagon (station wagon version). The ratio of the wheelbase to the total length is 61 percent. These features were intended to distinguish the Signum as a hatchback version from the Vectra sedans and position it independently as the top model from Opel. Accordingly, the Signum was marketed separately from the Vectra models.

Although the Signum thus belonged to the middle class , its new interior concept called FlexSpace meant that it should occupy the upper middle class, which was unoccupied due to the elimination of the Opel Omega B.

The interior concept

Rear view

The two single rear seats, which can be slid by 130 mm and fully retracted and whose backrest angle can also be individually adjusted by 30 °, should offer the comfort of a comfortable limousine combined with the advantages of a station wagon .

The interior is 8 centimeters longer than that of the Vectra sedans. The seat of the middle rear seat can be folded down and then offers various storage options or is the basis for the optional Travel Assistant - a cool box with two folding tables, storage compartment, cup holder, two 12 V sockets and remote control for the optionally available twin audio - System. Despite a fully-fledged three-point belt, the middle rear seat is only approved for people up to 1.75 m tall due to the low interior height. Vehicles without a sliding / tilting roof are equipped with a storage console in the middle of the headliner.

The trunk volume can be varied from 365 to 550 liters (calculated up to the height of the luggage compartment cover) depending on the position of the rear seats.

Facelift

After the minor facelift in March 2004, the vehicle was visually adapted to the brand's current design as part of the more extensive facelift in June 2005 . The length of the vehicle increased from the original 4636 mm to 4651 mm due to modified bumpers.

The distinguishing features of these models are the redesigned front section, the interior enhanced with chrome applications and new decorative strips and the new infotainment generation that was introduced shortly before .

With the appearance of the revised Signum, the 3.2-liter six-cylinder petrol engine was no longer available. The 2.2-liter direct injection petrol engine received a new 6-speed manual gearbox, but the familiar 5-speed manual gearbox was still available on request.

From January 2006, a modernized 1.8-liter four-cylinder petrol engine with 103 kW was available. This engine was also available with an automated five-speed manual transmission ( Easytronic ) on request . A 6-speed automatic transmission for the other engines was also offered. The 2.2-liter gasoline direct injection engine was optionally only available with a five-speed automatic.

Engines

The engine range of the Signum does not differ fundamentally from that of the Vectra C - with the exception of the 1.6-liter four-cylinder petrol engine and the OPC engines, which were not available for the Signum. The Signum Turbo S was the top model and was offered with a 2.8-liter six-cylinder engine with an output of 184 kW (250 hp). The 1.9-liter diesel engines had been developed jointly by GM Powertrain and Fiat and were initially equipped with a diesel particulate filter on request and later as standard .

After the end of the joint venture, General Motors and Fiat share the property rights to the 1.9-liter engines; production continued at Fiat due to long-term supply contracts. The 2.0 and 2.2 liter diesels, on the other hand, were an Opel development that was not offered ex works with a diesel particulate filter. The V6 diesel with initially 130 kW (177 PS; from June 2005: 135 kW / 184 PS) came from Isuzu.

paragraph

The Opel Signum never caught on in Germany, which is why it was discontinued in mid-2008 after around five years of construction without a direct successor. While 10,847 Signum vehicles were newly registered throughout Germany in the first full sales year 2004, the number was 8,962 in 2005, 8,040 in 2006, 6,212 in 2007 and only 3,669 vehicles in the last, no longer full sales year 2008.
