Operation Homecoming - Writing about the experience of war (AKA Operation Homecoming: Writing the Wartime Experience ) is an American documentary film from 2007, directed by Richard E. Robbins, who portrayed the lives and experiences of American combat soldiers in the wars of the US against Iraq and Afghanistan were involved.

The film was first shown in an American cinema on February 9, 2007. In Germany it was first seen on July 4, 2012 in the special interest channel ZDFkultur .

The film is based on a collection of written records from veterans who served during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, combined with news material and photos. These writings include diaries, letters, poems and essays collected by National Endowment for the Arts and previously published in the anthology Operation Homecoming: Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Home Front, in the Words of US Troops and Their Families (German Operation Homecoming: Iraq, Afghanistan and the Home Front in the words of US soldiers and their families ) had been released. The anthology was edited by bestselling author Andrew Carroll and published first in hardcover by Random House and later in paperback with additional material by the University of Chicago Press . The text will be performed by actors Beau Bridges , Robert Duvall , Aaron Eckhart , Chris Gorham , Justin Kirk , John Krasinski , Josh Lucas and Blair Underwood and the poet Brian Turner . The film also consists of commentary and interviews with literary authors such as Tobias Wolff , Tim O'Brien , Anthony Swofford , Paul Fussell and James Salter .

The documentary received mostly positive reviews from critics. The review-aggregating website Rotten Tomatoes states that the film has an average rating of 7.6 out of 10, based on 21 reviews, 19 of which are positive. Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment Weekly found the film eloquent and moving and gave it an A-. He added that the documentary succeeded in bringing the viewer closer to the emotions (mostly boredom and horror) of the soldiers fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan than perhaps any previous investigation . Boston Globe's Janice Page also agreed that no other work brought viewers closer to the psychology of war . However, Mark Olsen of the Los Angeles Times was more critical, commenting that the film did the written records a rather disservice in terms of understanding their emotional significance. The film received a 2.5 / 4-star rating from New York Post reviewer Kyle Smith, whose criticism was that the film did not adhere to the exact original text, leading to the dramatization of the lyrics.

The documentary was nominated for Best Documentary at the 80th Academy Awards . It was nominated for Best Documentary of the Year by the International Documentary Association . Operation Homecoming 2007 received the Film Festival Florida the Jury Special Prize for Innovative Documentary Storytelling .

For this documentary, director Richard E. Robbins was nominated for the 2007 Directors Guild of America Prize.
