The organ console in Dornum

The organ of St. Bartholomew's Church in Dornum was built by Gerhard von Holy in 1710–1711 and is one of the largest village organs in northern Germany and the third largest historical organ in East Frisia after north and Leer . It has 32 registers on three manuals and a pedal .

Building history

Predecessor organ

Around 1530 an organ was taken over from a monastery, which, according to tradition, is said to be the organ of the abolished Oldekloster monastery church , a branch of the Marienkamp monastery . This predecessor instrument must have been older and from the late Gothic period.

New building in 1711 by Holy

Holy took over six stops from the previous organ for his new organ (1710–1711). Under the impression of the new building in Jever , which was being carried out at the same time , Holy was commissioned to expand the organ with an independent pedal during the construction work in Dornum. Since the south wall did not offer the necessary space for this, it was decided to use the west gallery. Due to the low barrel vault, the Principal 16 'could only be in the pedal from B in the prospectus . The lower pipes are covered, so as a sub-bass behind them.

Repairs and changes between 1764 and 1932

A major repair by Hinrich Just Müller ( Wittmund ) is documented for the year 1764 , who was responsible for the annual maintenance from 1763 to 1811. Arnold Rohlfs repaired the keyboards in 1836. 1882–1883 Johann Diepenbrock ( Norden ) carried out a renovation and replaced seven old registers with new ones that corresponded to contemporary tastes and the keyboards. The tin-containing prospect pipes had to be delivered in 1917 for armament purposes and were only replaced by zinc pipes in 1932.

Renovations in the 20th century

According to plans by Christhard Mahrenholz , as part of the organ movement from 1935 to 1937, a restoration and restoration of Holy's disposition by P. Furtwängler & Hammer took place , albeit with factory pipes. In 1952 the instrument was placed under monument protection. In 1969 the Alfred Führer company repaired the worst damage to the heating system.

A comprehensive restoration was carried out in 1997/1998 by Jürgen Ahrend ( Leer-Loga ), who restored the original state according to strict monument preservation standards and reconstructed the twelve registers that were later renewed. The renovation of the warped housing, the game mechanism and the gaming table system as well as the wind system was complex . Finally, the “extended” mean-tone temperature was also applied again.

Six heavy, leaded stops come from the previous organ and 14 from Holy. The five wedge bellows are also original. The unsuitable white coloring was removed, so that the magnificent case with the rich carving corresponds to the restored richness of sound. The organ in Dornum belongs to Holy's early creative period, but it is a masterpiece of the highest craftsmanship and sound aesthetic level. The four original wooden flutes have a special sound characteristic, but also the rich possibilities for plenary registrations. It is interesting to compare it to the sister instrument that was made at the same time in Marienhafe .
