Oskar Roth

Oskar "Ossi" Roth (born February 23, 1933 in Heidelberg ; † March 12, 2019 ) was a German national basketball and handball player as well as a basketball and handball trainer .

Career

Roth began playing basketball at the Turnerbund Heidelberg , with whom he became German champions of the German Basketball Federation (DBB) in 1951, 1952 and 1953 . He then moved to USC Heidelberg , with whom he won the DBB championship six times in a row from 1957 to 1962 - in 1962, succeeding coach Anton Kartak , as player- coach .

Oskar Roth played 63  international matches for the German national basketball team , with which he took part in the European Basketball Championships in 1951 , 1953 , 1955 and 1961 . He missed participation in the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome due to a narrow defeat in the qualifying game against the GDR .

As a coach, he was runner-up with the women of USC Heidelberg in 1955 and won the German championship in 1956 with the male A youth team of USC.

Handball

In addition to basketball, Roth played handball at TSV Handschuhsheim . From there he moved to SG Leutershausen in 1959 , with whom he took part in the final round of the German championship in 1965 and 1966 and was runner-up behind VfL Gummersbach in 1966 .

After the end of his playing career, he became a coach at TSV Birkenau . With TSV he won the South German field handball championship in 1966 and also qualified for the newly founded indoor handball league .

Award

On November 4, 1951, the later record national player was awarded the silver laurel leaf by the President of the DBB, Siegfried Reiner, as a member of the men's team of TB Heidelberg .

Others

Oskar Roth was a sports teacher at the Johann Sebastian Bach Gymnasium in Mannheim . His twin sons Michael and Ulrich are former national handball players .
