Paolo Cesare Maldini (born June 26, 1968 in Milan ) is a former Italian football player . From 1984 to 2009 he spent his entire professional career at the Italian club AC Milan , with whom he won the Champions League five times . For the 2018/19 season he became Director of Strategic Development in the Sports Division at AC Milan, and has been Technical Director since 2019.

The son of the Italian football player and coach Cesare Maldini played for the traditional Italian club AC Milan from the age of ten . In the 1984/85 season Maldini made his Serie A debut on January 20, 1985 when playing against Udinese Calcio . Maldini came on as a substitute for the injured Sergio Battistini at halftime in that game. During the 1984/85 season Maldini completed no further game in the Italian league.

In the 1985/86 season Maldini was a regular player in the club. He has since been used mostly as a center-back or left full-back. The Scudetto in the 1987/88 season was the first title Maldini won with his club. From the late 1980s Maldini played alongside Franco Baresi , Marco van Basten , Roberto Donadoni , Ruud Gullit and Frank Rijkaard . From this time Maldini won numerous national and international titles with AC Milan and reached the national championship seven times, the national cup once and the Supercoppa Italiana five times. In addition, Maldini and his club won the European Cup twice , the Champions League three times, the UEFA Super Cup five times , the World Cup twice and the FIFA Club World Cup once .

In 1994 Maldini, who won the Scudetto and the Champions League with his club in the same year , was named Player of the Year by World Soccer magazine. He is the first defender to receive this award. After Baresi's career ended at the end of the 1996/97 season , Maldini was team captain. On March 11, 2007, he played his 600th league appearance in the city derby against Inter Milan . He was the Serie A record player with 647 league appearances until Gianluigi Buffon surpassed him on July 4, 2020 . His last game, also the 902nd in the Milanese jersey, played on May 31, 2009 away against Fiorentina (2-0 win).

On December 16, 2007, Maldini announced at the FIFA Club World Cup in Yokohama that he wanted to end his career in 2008, but reversed his decision two days after AC Milan had been eliminated in the Champions League last 16 against Arsenal on 7 December 2007 . March 2008 and extended his contract with Milan until June 30, 2009. On April 17, 2009 Maldini finally announced that he would not renew his contract with AC Milan and ended his career at the end of the 2008/09 season . He also announced that he wanted to continue working in the football business, but not as a coach.

National team

Maldini made his debut for the Italian national team on March 31, 1988 under Azeglio Vicini in the 1-1 draw against Yugoslavia . He was captain of his country from 1994 to 2002 and with 126 international matches until 2009, when Fabio Cannavaro replaced him, Italy's record international player .

Highlights of Maldini's international career were the finals at the 1994 World Cup (loss to Brazil) and the EM 2000 (loss to France). At the 1990 World Cup in their own country, Italy failed in the semi-finals to Argentina and finished the tournament in third place. Overall, Maldini took part with Italy in four soccer world championships (1990, 1994, 1998, 2002) and three soccer championships (1988, 1996, 2000).

Between 1996 and 1998 Maldini played under his father Cesare Maldini in the Italian national team. After the unsuccessful outcome of the 2002 World Cup for Italy (Italy failed in the second round to South Korea ), Maldini resigned from the national team. He refused to return to the Italian national team for the 2004 European Championship and the 2006 World Cup .

  • Paolo Maldini was eight times (1989, 1990, 1993–1995, 2003, 2005, 2007) in the finals of the European Cup and the UEFA Champions League . Together with Francisco Gento, he holds the record of finals in this European Cup competition. Gento played one more European Cup final since he also reached the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1971 .
  • In the 2002/03 Champions League season, he set the record for the most appearances in one season with 19 games.
  • Maldini is the player with the longest playing time in soccer world championships (2217 minutes).
  • After his departure as a football player at AC Milan , Maldini's number (“3”) will no longer be given to another player, unless one of his sons becomes a professional player at AC Milan.

Paolo Maldini has been a co-owner of Florida-based Miami FC since 2015 .

Occasionally Maldini takes part in tennis tournaments, for the first time at the age of 41. In June 2017 he and his partner Stefano Landonio received a wildcard for the challenger tournament in Milan . Participation had previously earned the pairing in a qualifying tournament.

For the 2018/19 season he became Director of Strategic Development in the Sports Division at AC Milan , and has been Technical Director since 2019.

Private

Maldini has five siblings. He is married and has two sons. His son Daniel Maldini , born in 2001, has been under contract with Milan since 2019 and made his Serie A debut in February 2020 .
