Paula Mae Weekes

Paula Mae Weekes (born December 23, 1958 in Port of Spain ) is a Trinidadian lawyer and politician and has been the president of her home country since 2018. She is the first woman in this role.

Life

Weekes went to school at Bishop Anstey High School in Port of Spain . The school followed in 1977 a law degree; she received her Bachelor of Laws from the University of the West Indies (UWI) at Cave Hill in 1980 and her Legal Education Certificate from Hugh Wooding Law School in St. Augustine in 1982 . Also in 1982 she was admitted to the court. For the next eleven years she worked in the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, the Trinidadian equivalent of the German GBA . From 1993 to 1996 she worked as a lawyer. In 1996 she became a criminal justice judge at the Trinidad High Court. From 2005 to 2016 she was a judge at the appellate court . In 2012, she acted as the chairperson of the court for a few days. From 2010 to 2016 she taught ethics at Hugh Wooding Law School. She retired in 2016. From September 2016, she was a judge at the court of appeal there at the invitation of the government of the Turks and Caicos Islands ; she was the first woman in this position. On January 5, 2018, she was named by the ruling PNM as a candidate to succeed Anthony Carmona . The opposition party UNC announced that it would not have its own candidate, so that the official nomination took place on January 8th. The election was scheduled for January 19, 2018. In the absence of an opposing candidate, Weeks was not elected on February 19, but was simply appointed. Her term began on March 19, 2018.

Weekes lives in Diego Martin . She is single and childless. In her private life she is involved in the Anglican Church and runs marathons. From 1997 to 2018 she was Chancellor, a kind of legal representative, of the Diocese of Trinidad and Tobago of the Anglican Church. She had a brother who died of AIDS in 2000 .
