middle Ages

Pfullingen was first mentioned in a document in a deed of donation from King Otto I the Great from 937. The place was the main town of the Pfullichgau , which stretched through the entire valley of the Echaz . During the time of the tribal duchies Pfullingen belonged to the Duchy of Swabia .

Towards the end of the 14th century lost Pfullingen due to the cities wars have city status after the city of Reutlingen had been captured and destroyed.

The Poor Clare Monastery in Pfullingen was founded in 1250 by Miss Mechtild and Irmel. The emperors gave it privileges and freedoms. The monastery hofmeister (attested by name from 1294 to 1806) was also a staff officer who also administered the monastery-owned towns of Genkingen and Reicheneck . The Bailiwick had Wuerttemberg held under whose patronage the monastery was already 1,442th During the Reformation the monastery was dissolved and fell apart. Württemberg time

In 1487 the last local nobleman from Pfullingen, Caspar Remp, sold his farms including the castle and all goods to Count Eberhard V. With this, the place came completely to Württemberg. With the villages of Unter- and Oberhausen, Honau, Holzelfingen and Kleinengstingen , Pfullingen formed a sub-office and thus became part of the Urach office . The basement to Pfullingen was royal bailiff and had the Low justice held.

During the Thirty Years' War , Pfullingen was the administrative seat of the Achalm Pfandschaft from 1635 to 1648, with short interruptions, and was therefore part of Upper Austria . The place was subjected to the re-Catholicization, got a Catholic priest and the monastery was occupied by Söflinger Poor Clares . The Austrian managers had its seat in the castle by attacks of the commander of Württemberg fortress Hohentwiel , Konrad Widerholt was badly damaged. In one of these attacks, the Catholic priest was murdered and Pfullingen was plundered. With the Peace of Westphalia , Pfullingen came back to Württemberg. The monastery was evacuated.

In 1699 Pfullingen was given town charter again and was elevated to a monastery office. It was not until 1806 that the monastery office fell to the Oberamt Reutlingen when the new administrative structure in the Kingdom of Württemberg was implemented . In 1824 there were 3,435 inhabitants in the town of Pfullingen.

The water power of the Echaz favored industrialization very early . As early as 1830, 22 water engines were counted. The previously predominant agriculture fell sharply, and the viticulture, which was also operated, no longer exists today. In 1907 the aqueduct was built.

On June 2, 1892, the Royal Württemberg State Railways opened an 11.03-kilometer standard-gauge branch line from Reutlingen Central Station via Pfullingen to Honau .

The administrative reform in Württemberg during the Nazi era led to membership in the new Reutlingen district in 1938 .

post war period

In 1945 Pfullingen became part of the French occupation zone and in 1947 it was assigned to the newly founded state of Württemberg-Hohenzollern , which was incorporated into the state of Baden-Württemberg in 1952.

Starting in 1963, they built the residential castle path , in 1966 was followed by the development of the Business Park Stage , 1967-1973 of the residential area Ahlsberg and 1980-1986 of the residential area Brühl / Kühnbach . badges and flags

Blazon : "In blue under a black deer pole, a silver pillow with gold tassels on the four corners and a red push."

Since the beginning of the 15th century, Pfullingen had a seal that was first handed down in an imprint in 1501, which shows the "Pfulben" (= Pfühl, pillow) under the Württemberger stag bar, which is the name of the place; today one declares him with the special right of a spring market. Around 1600, the field color red is attested several times, and a little later the stag's pole was placed in a shield head. The city charter was not granted until 1699. After the field color blue, which was later used and the golden shield head was omitted, the current design of the coat of arms was determined in 1934. The background of the coat of arms is blue, the color of the Lords of Lichtenstein and the Rempen.

The city flag is blue-white-red.

Town twinning

Since 1985 there has been an official city partnership with the French municipality of Passy, which has around 11,000 inhabitants . The very tourism-oriented municipality is located about 53 kilometers southeast of Geneva in the Haute-Savoie department with a view of Mont Blanc . Since 1973 there have been regular encounters between the Friedrich-Schiller-Gymnasium in Pfullingen and the Lycée de Mont-Blanc in Passy. This extended to encounters between associations of both cities and finally ended in 1985 in an official city partnership, which celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2010.

Since 2012 there has also been a town partnership with the Saxon community of Lichtenstein . It was signed in Lichtenstein on September 29, 2012 as part of a partnership celebration, to which some Pfullinger associations also traveled.

In addition, friendly relationships with the community of Großbreitenbach in Thuringia have been maintained for years .

Pfullingen is the headquarters of the Prettl Group. Daimler-Benz AG and Bosch are also represented in the city.

Pfullinger Pfulben

In order to sustainably strengthen the economy, Pfullinger Pfulben was introduced on March 20, 2011 . This is a gift voucher (but it is also often referred to as Pfullinger currency), which can be used for payment at around 100 retailers, specialist shops, service providers, etc. The Pfullinger Pfulben cracked the 10,000 euro mark in the first seven weeks . A strong year later, in August 2012, there were 66,000 pfulbes in circulation.

traffic

The federal highway 312 , coming from the federal highway 8 at Stuttgart airport , leads past Pfullingen via Riedlingen and Biberach an der Riss to Memmingen . In December 2003, the bypassing of the local passage in the form of the 1180 m long Ursulaberg tunnel was opened to traffic.

Local public transport is guaranteed by the Neckar-Alb-Danube transport association (NALDO). The city is in honeycomb 220.

Until 1980 Pfullingen was connected to the Reutlingen – Schelklingen railway line . Today a bike path is laid out on the route. For several years, however, the Neckar-Alb regional light rail (lines S2 and S6) from Plochingen via Reutlingen and Pfullingen to Schelklingen has been under discussion. In addition, from 1916 to 1974 the Reutlingen tram connected the town with the district town.

Citizen bus

Since May 30, 2011, a citizens' bus has been operating from Monday to Friday, driven by volunteer drivers. With a route known as the 3-leaf clover , it connects the residential areas of the east and west cities on the mountain slopes with the city center. The Pfullinger Citizens 'Bus is supported by the Pfullinger Citizens ' Meeting , an association for civic engagement, as well as by the city administration and, thanks to the volunteer drivers, is supposed to cover its operating costs with the ticket revenues alone. First of all, a two-year trial run with a rental vehicle was started. The concept has proven itself; the vehicle was acquired by the city. In the first year of operation more than 6,000 passengers could be carried.

The public bus offers in Ebersbach an der Fils and Salach served as an example .

People mover

Pfullingen has become known in recent years through the installation of a prototype of the new pedestrian crossing system Peoplemover . The Pfullingen people mover is the only street-crossing elevator system in the world. People who want to cross the street are first lifted up in an elevator car in a tower that serves as a supporting pillar, then along a bridge horizontally across the street and finally back to the level of the street surface.

The people mover was developed by Schmid Maschinenbau, the supporting structure being planned by Knaack-Reich. The Pfullingen people mover, which can transport four people at once, went into operation on July 7, 2001. The construction has a span of 22.5 meters. In 2009, the system was shut down until further notice due to extremely high operating and maintenance costs.

In Germany there are two other elevator systems of this type that are used at train stations to cross tracks.
