Pietro Cardinal Parolin [ ˈpjetro paroˈliŋ ] (born January 17, 1955 in Schiavon , Province of Vicenza , Italy ) is a Roman Catholic Curia Cardinal , diplomat of the Holy See and since October 2013 acting State Secretary of His Holiness (Cardinal Secretary of State ).

Life

After graduating from a humanistic grammar school ( Liceo classico ) in Vicenza , Pietro Parolin entered the Vicenza seminary in 1969 and studied Catholic theology and philosophy there . He graduated from the Theological Faculty of Northern Italy in Milan with a Bachelor of Theology . In 1979 he was ordained a deacon and then worked as a pastor in the parish of Santissima Trinità in Schio .

On April 27, 1980, Pietro Parolin received the sacrament of ordination through Bishop Arnoldo Onisto in the Cathedral of Vicenza . Then he was chaplain in Schio until 1982 . From 1984 to 1986 studied Parolin at the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy and in 1986 was the Pontifical Gregorian University for Doctor of Canon Law ( Doctor of Law. Can. ) PhD .

On July 1, 1986, Parolin entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See and initially worked for the Apostolic Nunciature in Nigeria. Pope John Paul II awarded him the honorary title of chaplain of His Holiness ( Monsignor ) on May 14, 1988 . In 1989 Pietro Parolin moved to the Apostolic Delegation in Mexico . In 1992 he became a Nunciature Councilor in the section for relations with the states of the Vatican State Secretariat and in this function was primarily responsible for Spain , Andorra , Italy and San Marino . On November 30, 2002, he was appointed Undersecretary of the Section for Relations with the States, thus serving as Deputy Foreign Minister. As such, he repeatedly led a delegation from the Holy See that had started talks with the communist government in Vietnam since 1990 after diplomatic relations were broken off in the wake of the communist takeover in 1975. He was also responsible for the diplomatic negotiations between Israel and the Holy See.

On August 17, 2009 Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . the Titular Archbishop of Aquipendium and apostolic nuncio in Venezuela . The episcopal ordination received his Benedict XVI. on September 12 of the same year in St. Peter's Basilica ; Co-consecrators were Cardinal Secretary of State Tarcisio Bertone SDB and the Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith , William Joseph Cardinal Levada .

On August 31, 2013, Pope Francis appointed him with effect from October 15, 2013 to succeed Tarcisio Bertone as Cardinal Secretary of State.

In the solemn consistory on February 22, 2014, Pope Francis accepted him as a cardinal priest with the titular church Santi Simone e Giuda Taddeo a Torre Angela in the college of cardinals . In addition, Francis accepted him on July 2 of the same year in the Cardinals' Commission, which should support him in the planned reform of the Curia.

After a speech by the Pope before the EU Parliament at the beginning of December 2014, Cardinal Parolin described the European Union as a “tool to secure peace, prosperity and a place in the world for Europe” and expressed his hope that Eurosceptics would be convinced by the European project .

Regarding the result of the constitutional referendum in Ireland in 2015 , he said, among other things, "I think that this was not only a defeat of Christian principles, but also a bit of a defeat of humanity".

In November 2017, Cardinal Parolin criticized the global health system at a meeting of Catholic health experts. He stated that "the fundamental right to adequate health care should apply to all people" and "should not depend on economic, social or legal factors".

Pope Francis elevated him to cardinal bishop with effect from June 28, 2018 while retaining his titular church .

In addition to his native Italian, Parolin speaks French, English and Spanish fluently. He represented the Pope several times as his legate, including at the celebrations for the coronation of the Thai King Rama X. from May 4 to 6, 2019 in Bangkok .
