The Roman Catholic Church in Sierra Leone ( English Catholic Church in Sierra Leone ) is part of the worldwide Roman Catholic Church .

History and structure

The Catholic Church in Sierra Leone dates back to 1510 when the first Portuguese missionaries came to the country. As early as 1532 the first diocese was founded, which also included today's Sierra Leone.

The Catholic Church is organized in the ecclesiastical province of Freetown. Metropolitan and Archbishop of Freetown has been Edward Tamba Charles since 2008 .

  • Archdiocese of Freetown : Founded in 1971 as the Archdiocese of Freetown and Bo ; about 70,000 believers and 28 priests
  • Diocese of Bo : separated from the Archdiocese of Freetown and Bo in 2011 ; 100,000 believers in 15 parishes with 30 priests
  • Diocese of Kenema : founded in 1970; about 80,000 believers in 16 parishes with 21 priests.
  • Makeni Diocese : founded in 1952; 21 congregations with 29 priests (as of 2009)
