The sculptor Ulrich Rückriem has strong ties to Düren and its surroundings. Between 1988 and 1990 he created a total of 10 steles that were set up in specific locations in the city. Rückriem's special technique consists in splitting stone using various techniques and then putting it back together in its original shape. The Düren steles are all 4 m high, 1 m wide and 1 m deep.

The sculptor used granite for the sculptures .

The steles are all close to historically significant locations in the city. The first stele was erected on the 50th anniversary of the Reichspogromnacht (1988), the tenth and last stele almost two years later in September 1990.

Nine steles are related to National Socialism or the Second World War , i.e. the past, one to the future. They are available in the following places:

Since 1992, every year on November 9th (Reichspogromnacht) at 7 p.m. on all 10 steles, reminder hours have been held under the theme "Remembering - Staying Awake". Schools, parishes, political parties, other groups and individuals are involved as preparatory work.
