The breakpoint in the great valley

The Dueren Railway (DEAG) took on 1 April 1893, the 2.8-kilometer meter-gauge railway line from Düren to Birkesdorf for freight transport in operation. The first passenger transport followed a year later on June 1, 1894. The Birkesdorf station was also the operational center of the railway. On September 9, 1897 DEAG received the concession for passenger traffic and the further construction of the railway in the direction of Inden . Rail traffic was finally stopped on June 30, 1965. Many people remember the “ fiery Elias ”, who pulled the railroad cars through the center of the town across the main street.

From July 20, 1912 to February 28, 1970, Birkesdorf had a train station called Birkesdorf-Süd on the ring line of the Dürener Kreisbahn (DKB). This was primarily used for freight traffic and - until the First World War - to connect the HM Schoeller paper mill. From 1951 to 1955, passenger trains also ran to Mariaweiler and Distelrath during rush hour .

Since November 2001 there has been a stop in the industrial area in the large valley on the Jülich – Düren railway line . It was built on exactly the same stop at Arnoldsweiler, which was abandoned by the Federal Railroad in 1973.

The DKB, Rurtalbus since January 1, 2020 , travels to the place with various bus lines, e.g. B. the lines 205, 206, 209 and 216.
