Echtz ( Dürener Platt Äex ) used to form (since 1972) together with the smaller town of Konzendorf the north-western district of “ Echtz-Konzendorf ” of Düren in North Rhine-Westphalia . These are now two independent districts of Düren; These were also postally separated when the reorganization took place on July 1, 1993 (zip code Echtz = 52353; zip code Konzendorf = 52355).

The place is west of the Rur , south of the A4 and north of the B 264 . Neighboring towns are Merken , Hoven , Konzendorf and Mariaweiler (all in Düren) and Geich (in Langerwehe ).

On the southern outskirts of the village is the "Badesee Echtz" - also called " Echtzer See ", a former open- cast lignite mine in which lignite was mined from 1918 to 1941 . To the northwest of the Echtzer See there is a smaller deposit with 73 million cubic meters of lignite, which extends as far as the A 4.

history

Echtz (Eychtz, Aecheze) was initially a royal estate in the high Middle Ages . Mathilde , youngest daughter of Emperor Otto II . and the Empress Theophanu , is said to have died here in 1025. From 1336 to the French occupation at the end of the 18th century, Echtz was the main town of the Jülich-Berg subordinate rule of the Princes of Merode. In 1735 , Margarethe Geich was burned as the last witch in Echtz on the Schöbbich . From 1816, Echtz was the eponymous place of the mayor's office Echtz until the municipal reorganization , to which, in addition to the community of Echtz, the communities of Geich bei Echtz , Merode and Schlich also belonged. From the mayor Echtz 1928 was official Echtz. The community of Echtz was later given the official name of Echtz-Konzendorf . It was incorporated into Düren on January 1, 1972.

The sports club Teutonia Echtz 1920 e. V. is a DFB base and, in addition to football and tennis, also has a Ju-Jutsu department (international spelling Ju Jitsu , in Germany also Jiu Jitsu , also Dschiu Dschitsu is outdated ).

Regular events

The May Society is one of the oldest clubs in town. It was founded in 1877 and holds a large May festival in town every year.

Many associations shape the cultural life in this district. Statistically speaking, everyone is in three clubs. In order to improve the coordination between the associations, the citizens of Echtz founded the community of interests of Echtzer Ortsvereine in 1967 with the help and support of Pastor Esser .

The sponsoring association “Association for the Promotion of Youth e. V. “(VFJ) has existed since 1978 and has been running an open youth club since 1982, the Echtz youth home.

The Echtz fire fighting group with its youth fire brigade is part of the 5th fire brigade of the city of Düren's volunteer fire brigade . It has its own fire station with a fire fighting vehicle 8/6 and a team transport vehicle .

The KG Echtzer Seehexen has been active in the village as a carnival company since 1995.
