Rafael Buschmann (born March 1, 1982 in Zabrze , Poland ) is a German journalist for Spiegel .

Life

Buschmann grew up in Poland until he was seven, and in 1989 he emigrated with his family to North Rhine-Westphalia . First he had Polish citizenship, then he took German. He now lives in Münster, Westphalia .

Buschmann studied German, education, sport and psychology at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster and graduated with a state examination. During his studies he received a scholarship from the German National Academic Foundation. Buschmann then worked as a research assistant and lecturer at the Center for Teacher Training at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster. His academic focus was on the topics of intercultural education and integrative politics.

journalism

In 2010 Buschmann became a reporter in the sports department of Spiegel Online , in 2013 he switched to the print magazine Der Spiegel . He deals with investigative topics, among other things writes on betting fraud, corruption, right-wing extremism, security.

In 2016, Buschmann gained access to 18.6 million documents from Football Leaks' online activists . He shared the data with over 50 journalists from the European Investigative Collaboration and worked with a Spiegel team for seven months on, among other things, revelations about the tax tricks of Cristiano Ronaldo , Mesut Özil , a Dutch-Argentinian player advisory group and the sports marketer Doyen. The Mirror TV magazine dedicated to research your own movie. In 2017, Buschmann and Michael Wulzinger published the bestselling book Football Leaks - The dirty business in professional football .

At the end of 2018, Spiegel and the EIC again published a series of publications based on the Football Leaks data, for example about the plans for a European Super League, violations of the financial fair play of Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain , Gianni Infantino , the Ghanaian football academy Right to Dream, racist scouting practices at PSG, or the continued payment of wages in the British Women's Super League. In September 2019, Buschmann and Wulzinger published another bestseller, Football Leaks 2 - New Revelations from the World of Professional Football .

Buschmann got into controversy through his article “Rotten apples” about the 2014 World Cup . The main claim of the article is that the game changer Wilson Raj Perumal Buschmann predicted the correct outcome in a Facebook chat hours before a World Cup match. Perumal stated that the chat did not take place until after the game and published alleged screenshots of the chat. In July 2019, as part of a planned promotion of Buschmann to head of the investigative team, criticism of the article came up again, which is why the planned promotion was postponed until an internal investigation was completed. On September 25, 2019, Spiegel-Verlag announced that Buschmann would waive the transport. Buschmann's screenshots are said to have been lost when his cell phone fell into a puddle. After the internal investigation was completed, the article was removed from the Internet, even if Der Spiegel is convinced of the correctness of the story.

Awards

In 2014, the Medium Magazin jury voted Buschmann 3rd place among the sports journalists of the year. His article on networking hooligans and right-wing extremists ( hooligans versus Salafists ) was awarded a prize.

In 2015, Buschmann, together with Jürgen Dahlkamp , Jörg Schmitt , Jens Weinreich , Udo Ludwig and Gunther Latsch, received the Nannen Prize in the “Best Investigation” category for their work on the “ Summer Fairy Tale Affair ” on the presumably purchased award of the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

The jury of Medium Magazine voted Buschmann 2016 “Sports Journalist of the Year” for his report Hunt for Little John about the Football Leaks whistleblower.

Buschmann was nominated together with Özlem Gezer , Guido Mingels , Takis Würger , Claas Relotius , Maik Grossekathöfer and Fiona Ehlers with the text Die Lebenden und die Toten 2016 for the Reporter Prize and 2017 for the Nannen Prize .

The Association of German Sports Journalists honored Buschmann several times for his research. Including both for a text about right-wing extremists in the security service of Borussia Dortmund and for a report about an African football talent exploited by player advisors.
