Udo Ludwig

Udo Ludwig (* 1958 in Werl ) is a German journalist . He is considered one of the best-known representatives of investigative journalism in Germany and, through many years of research, one of the most intimate connoisseurs of the doping scene , especially in German cycling . As an editor he works mainly for the Hamburg news magazine Der Spiegel . The main focuses of his work are the areas of sport, medicine and consumer protection , which does not exclude other topics.

Life

After graduating from the Mariengymnasium in Werl, Ludwig did his traineeship at the Westfalenpost , where he then worked for some time as an editor. He completed a subsequent study of social sciences and sports science at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster in 1984 with an exam. Then he stayed in Kenya for half a year . He then worked as a freelance journalist for daily newspapers and weekly magazines. He has been with the news magazine Der Spiegel since 1990 , initially in the sports department and since then in the Germany department.

In addition to his numerous contributions to the Spiegel (among other things, the cyclist Jörg Jaksche revealed his doping for the first time in an interview in June 2007), Udo Ludwig has also published several monographs in book form as a sole author or with co-authors. Ludwig also works for the Bertelsmann referents agency , currently (2010) also a lecturer in research training at the Hamburg Media Office (an institution of the Hamburg Evangelical Lutheran Church District Association in the North Elbian Evangelical Lutheran Church ). He is also a lecturer at the Institute for the Promotion of Young Journalists in Munich (Journalism School of the Catholic Church) and at the semi-state Hamburg Media School . Since September 1, 2016, Ludwig has been Head of Sport at “Spiegel”.

In his private life, Ludwig is an active athlete himself ( handball player and marathon runner ). He lives with his family in Hamburg.

  • 2009: German Journalist Prize (one of the two shared 1st prizes in the “Bank & Insurance” category; together with co-authors Klaus Brinkbäumer , Frank Hornig, Hauke ​​Goos and Christoph Pauly) for the Spiegel article “Gorillas Spiel” about the fall of the Bank Lehman Brothers .
  • 2008: Henri Nannen Prize (together with Matthias Geyer, Lothar Gorris and Detlef Hacke) in the “Best investigative achievement” category for the contribution to doping in German cycling in the magazine Der Spiegel.
  • In 2016, Ludwig was awarded the Nannen Prize in the “Best Investigation” category as a member of a SPIEGEL team together with Jörg Schmitt , Rafael Buschmann , Gunther Latsch, Jürgen Dahlkamp and Jens Weinreich . The work for the article Sommer, Sonne, Schwarzgeld , which appeared in October 2015, is honored. He addressed the presumably bought award of the 2006 soccer World Cup and led u. a. on the resignation of Wolfgang Niersbach as DFB President.
