Remzi Oğuz Arık

Remzi Oğuz Arık (born July 15, 1899 in Kabaktepe , Kozan ; died April 3, 1954 ) was a Turkish archaeologist and politician.

Life

Remzi Oğuz Arık was in 1899 in the village Kabaktepe the district Kozan in the province of Adana born to Mehmed Ferid Bey. There he received his primary education. He moved with the family to Selanik and in 1913 to Istanbul , where he completed a teacher training course. After participating in the First World War , he taught at the Galatasaray High School in Istanbul. He then began studying at the Faculty of Literature at Istanbul University and then studied archeology and art history at the Sorbonne in Paris . After completing his training, he returned to Istanbul in 1931, where he worked at the Istanbul Archaeological Museum . Then he was involved in excavations on Göllüdağ , in Alaca Höyük (with Hâmit Zübeyir Koşay ), Çankırı Kapı ( Ankara ), Hacılar , Bitik and Alaettintepe ( Konya ), about which he also published some excavation reports. In 1939 he became professor of archeology at the Faculty of Linguistics, History and Geography at Istanbul University.

In 1950 he became a DP deputy for Seyhan in the Grand National Assembly . In 1952 he left the DP and joined the newly founded farmers' party (Türkiye Köylü Partisi) , of which he became chairman. On April 3, 1954, he was killed in a plane crash on the route from Adana to Ankara .
