Rocketman is a biography of Elton John directed by Dexter Fletcher that premiered on May 16, 2019 at the Cannes International Film Festival . Taron Egerton embodies the English pop star and musician, Jamie Bell can be seen as the lyricist Bernie Taupin . The film was released in the United Kingdom on May 24, 2019, in German cinemas on May 30, 2019, and one day later in US theaters.

action

The film is a musical retelling of the beginnings, the breakthrough and the drug era of Elton John . The framework begins when he bursts into a drug help group in a bright orange stage costume at the age of around 40. From here we look back at his previous life.

As a child he is raised by his self-centered mother Sheila and the more caring grandmother Ivy; his father is not interested in him. He developed a passion for music, took piano lessons and, from the age of eleven, took Saturday piano lessons at the Royal Academy of Music . As a young adult he played in a band. He meets the lyricist Bernie Taupin , with whom he writes his greatest songs.

After his first appearances in the USA, John quickly became world famous and earned a lot of money. He has a relationship with his manager John Reid , but he wants to benefit from his money. John finally breaks up with him. As his success increases, he develops an increasing problem with alcohol and other drugs . He enters into a marriage with his German girlfriend Renate Blauel in order to find support there, but the marriage fails after a short time because of his homosexuality.

When his life got completely out of hand, Elton John finally seeks help, and he renews his friendship with Bernie Taupin.

production

Elton John at the premiere for the film in Cannes

Directed by Dexter Fletcher . In 2018 Fletcher had already published a biography about the musician Freddie Mercury with Bohemian Rhapsody . The script was written by Lee Hall .

Taron Egerton took on the role of Elton John , Jamie Bell that of his longtime partner Bernie Taupin . Bryce Dallas Howard plays John's mother Sheila. Richard Madden and Gemma Jones can also be seen in other roles .

The score was composed by Matthew Margeson , who most recently worked with Fletcher for Eddie the Eagle - Anything is Possible . On May 24, 2019, Rocketman: Music From The Motion Picture, an album with 22 songs, was released. Rocket Man and an accompanying music video, some of which consists of film clips, were released in early May 2019. Egerton reinterpreted John's songs for the film and the album and sang them himself, including rather unknown songs by John, such as the Border Song from 1970, which is about loneliness and alienation and shows what a great lyricist his musical husband Bernie Taupin is already was the age of 20, says Ulf Kubanke of laut.de . For the brand new exclusive track (I'm Gonna) Love Me Again , John appears in person in the music video for a cameo duet. John and Egerton also presented the song Tiny Dancer together in February 2019 at the Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Viewing Party.

A first trailer was presented at the beginning of October 2018. A first long trailer followed in mid-February 2019. The film was shown for the first time on May 16, 2019 as part of the Cannes International Film Festival in the main competition out of competition. It was released in UK theaters on May 24, 2019 and in US theaters on May 31, 2019. A cinema release in Germany took place on May 30, 2019.

reception

Age rating

In the USA, the film received an R rating from the MPAA , which corresponds to a rating of 17 and over. In Germany, the film was approved for ages 12 and up . The reason for the release states that the action and the problems presented are understandable for children from 12 years of age. The inner turmoil of Elton John is made just as clearly understandable as the clearly negative attitude towards drugs and alcohol. In Russia, although the film was only approved for people aged 18 and over, major distributors shortened the film to include homoerotic and drug-related scenes.

Reviews and grossing results

So far, the film has won over 89 percent of all Rotten Tomatoes critics and received an average rating of 7.6 out of a possible 10 points, making it the winner of the 21st Annual Golden Tomato Awards in the Musicals & Music Movies 2019 category . He also took one of the middle places in the films presented in Cannes. He received mixed reviews in the critic.de review.

Andreas Busche from Tagesspiegel writes that Dexter Fletcher relived the 1970s heartily in Rocketman , with no excess being left out. Fletcher dutifully ticks off the most important stations in Elton John's career : “The difficult relationship with the cold-hearted mother and the loveless father, his unacknowledged homosexuality, which the film - unlike Bohemian Rhapsody - does not downplay, the exploitative relationship with his manager and lover as well the friendship with his long-time partner Bernie Taupin , who wrote a large part of John's hits. ”The film always lapses into a gloomy tone when it talks about the self-destructive instinct of the manic-depressive musician, but it is the musical interludes that Rocketman finds himself in soar to a delirious, bombastic pop psychedelic, which in its best moments is reminiscent of the musicals of a Baz Luhrmann .

Taron Egerton , here in March 2018, played
Elton John in the film

Barbara Schweizerhof from epd Film also writes that Rocketman is a little less prudish than Bohemian Rhapsody with his dance numbers and a short, if rather well-behaved sex scene . It is perhaps the more sympathetic, if unfortunately just as unoriginal film. Even if Rocketman is pleasantly open with both homosexuality and the long years of denial, the resulting self-hatred and drug addiction of his hero, one notices the film through and through that this is a sanctioned and therefore disinfected version of a life is.

The German Film and Media Assessment gave the film the rating of particularly valuable . The jury's reasoning stated: “The script and direction of the film created a very special artist biography: all private scenes [...] were combined in musical form with his [Elton John's] songs and a brilliant choreography. Dramaturgically perfect, the songs transport the plot decisively and maintain the tension. "

Ulf Kubanke from laut.de thinks that Taron Egerton balances comfortably on a fine dividing line between embodiment and his own identity: “On the one hand, his portrayal goes as far as Elton-John-esker emphasis on individual words and syllables, although he does not speak of Sir Elton's masculine power Timbre, which despite all the queerness is his trademark. ”At this point Egerton is doing everything right, leaving the path of absolute imitation and indulging in the necessary little bit of your own interpretation, says Kubanke.

The worldwide revenue from cinema shows is $ 195.18 million. In Germany it has so far recorded 612,835 visitors.
