Royce da 5'9 " (born July 5, 1977 in Detroit , Michigan ; real name Ryan Daniel Montgomery ), formerly also known as Royce The 5'9" , is an American rapper and songwriter, whose name is derived from the trademark The Rolls-Royce car brand, 5 feet and 9 inches tall, Royce is a member of the hip-hop groups Bad Meets Evil , Slaughterhouse and PRhyme.

Life

Royce grew up in Detroit, where he met Eminem in 1997 , before Dr. Dre was discovered. With Eminem he was active with the duo Bad Meets Evil . They produced several songs, of which See You In Hell was later included in Eminem's album The Slim Shady LP as Bad meets Evil .

Royce da 5'9 ″ was a ghostwriter to Dr. Involved in Dres 2001 album and originally also had a part on Xxplosive . Some of the songs he wrote did not make it onto the album and later leaked . When Royce's then manager publicly announced the ghostwriting, Dr. Dre that Royce parted ways with him. Royce refused, however, and ended working with Dre.

Tommy Boy Records became aware of Royce in 2000 and signed him. The collaboration was only brief, the announced debut album Rock City was not released. He moved to the New York label Game Recordings , which helped him to release his debut album in 2002 through a contract with Columbia Records . Here, too, the collaboration lasted only a short time. The album was taken off the market by Columbia and re-mixed as Rock City (version 2.0) by Koch Records in the same year . The executive producer of the album was Eminem. Individual songs were produced by The Neptunes , Trackmasters and DJ Premier .

In the same year he tried to get under contract with Eminem's label Shady Records , which was rejected by Eminem, because he did not want to take on new artists. Two weeks after the request, 50 Cent signed with Shady Records. This was the occasion for beef between Royce and Eminem, which was supported by D12 . After various disstracks , there was an open confrontation between Royce and D12 member Proof, in the course of which firearms were also involved. The two adversaries were arrested and spent one night in jail, where they settled their differences.

In 2004 Royce released the album Death is Certain again through Koch , the content of which is about beef with the other Detroit rappers. Production was done by Carlos, a member of The Hitmen . DJ Premier also produced a song. The album reached number 161 on the Billboard Top 200. The album was followed by Independent's Day , which was released in 2005 .

On September 19, 2006 Royce da 5'9 ″ was sentenced to one year in prison for violating probation conditions. However, he was released in early January 2007 as part of a work project.

In May 2007, Montgomery released a mixtape called The Bar Exam with DJ Premier and Statik Selektah . He then worked as a ghostwriter for Diddy's album Press Play . Diddy showed interest in getting Royce for his Bad Boy Entertainment label , and Nas also offered to sign Montgomery for his label. Finally Royce came as 5'9 "but under contract with Gracie Productions .

On June 13, 2011 the EP Hell: The Sequel was released, which Royce da 5'9 ″ recorded together with Eminem under the name Bad Meets Evil and could reach number 1 in the US charts.

At the end of 2014 the collaboration album PRhyme was released with DJ Premier on the label of the same name.
