The sand pit im Jagen 86 (colloquially: gravel pit ) is a nature reserve with a size of about 13  hectares in Berlin's Grunewald . It emerged from a former gravel pit that was used industrially from 1966 to 1983. Today there are over 300 fern and flowering plants, wasps and wild bees , 16  breeding bird species , seven amphibian species and 188  butterfly species .

history

In the 17 years of its industrial use, a total of around 3.5 million cubic meters of fine sand were mined from an Ice Age Teltow slab for building purposes. This created an open area of around 18 hectares and a depth of up to 25 meters.

Nature reserve

After the quarrying of the construction sand was stopped, conservationists tried to the area. In 1992 a total of 13 hectares were designated as a nature reserve. Since the groundwater level in this region is quite high, the pit up to 25 meters deep created shallow water and wet willow breaks. In the mostly dry part of the bottom of the pit, there are sandy areas with no vegetation, as well as dry and poor grassland. In the nutrient-poor waters you can find numerous amphibian species that spawn here . In the past few years, targeted maintenance measures such as clearing have reduced the progressive forest cover on the slopes. So u. a. the south-facing slopes are kept open. In addition, fences were installed so that ground-nesting species of bees and wasps can develop undisturbed and the site can also be kept open to visitors.

Access to the nature reserve is via the Schildhornweg via three paved accesses. Ramps were installed to the north and south of the sand pit; at the northeast corner there is a staircase with 134 steps. A total of three display boards inform the visitor about the gravel pit, the wetland and the warmth-loving fauna.
