geography

Historical aerial photo from 300 m by Walter Mittelholzer from 1923

Schiers is located in the front Prättigau at the confluence of the screw axis in the Landquart , which flows through the municipality for about 5 km from southeast to northwest. The almost continuously wooded slope south of the river, the Landquartberg, reaches around 1,600  m above sea level. M. Much larger and more diverse presents itself, the northern part of the territory. It extends from the Landquart to the peaks of the Rätikon , so far as the watershed against the Montafon , the same state border with Austria . The the Kalkstöcken the Drusenfluh (main peak 2,827 m, the highest point of the municipality) upstream hilly landscape consists of soft Bündnerschiefer so that the Schraubach and its numerous source and tributaries deep ravine dug, which the scattered on the hills Maiensässe and Alps separate and make the construction and maintenance of roads very expensive.

In addition to the street village of Schiers, the districts Lunden, Fajauna, Stels, Maria-Montagna, Pusserein and Schuders , which formed an independent community from 1851 to 1878, belong to the community .

Neighboring communities are Grüsch , Seewis im Prättigau , Luzein , Jenaz , Furna as well as Vandans and Tschagguns (both belonging to the Austrian state of Vorarlberg ).

history

Various finds prove the settlement of the area in the Bronze and Iron Ages . The place Scieres and the church of St. Johann, the early church of the Prättigau founded in the 5th century, are first mentioned in a document in 1101. The place name goes back to the vulgar Latin adjective ăcĕrĕu, ăcĕrĕa, a derivation of the Latin acer "maple", as with the nearby hamlet of Ascharina (municipality of Luzein) .

The sovereign rights came through inheritance from the Vazern to the Toggenburgers in 1335 , after which - which gave rise to the establishment of the Ten Courts League in 1436 - finally to the House of Habsburg , from whose rule the Prättigauers were able to buy themselves out in 1649. Within the ten- court federation, Schiers, Grüsch and Seewis formed the Schiers court, which was divided into two half- courts in 1679. From the rights of the Chur Cathedral Chapter , which had been wealthy in Schiers since the 12th century , a separate jurisdiction had developed, the Schiers Chapter Court, which was merged with the Schiers Court in 1506. Up to that point in time one spoke of the union of the eleven courts .

In 1563 the community joined the Reformation . In the same century there was a transition from Romance to German.

education

Schiers is known for its Evangelical Middle School Schiers , a Christian grammar school with boarding school founded in 1837 as a teacher training college . From 1894 to 1900 Gottfried Fankhauser worked here as a lecturer. One of the most famous students was Alberto Giacometti .

Regional Hospital Prättigau

economy

As the location of the regional hospital operated by the Flury Foundation and several educational institutions, the community fulfills a central function in the valley. In addition to a number of companies in the construction industry and related branches of the economy (wood processing, gravel works) and numerous farms, there is a large butcher's shop and meat drying shop. The printing works and the editorial office of the regional newspaper Prättigauer und Herrschäftler are also located in Schiers .

Schiers station (1961)

traffic

Schiers is on the Landquart - Klosters line of the Rhaetian Railway, which was opened in 1889 . There are hourly direct connections with RegioExpress trains to Davos and the Lower Engadine . The station was completely rebuilt in 2004. Four post bus lines open up the smaller fractions and also connect the place with the neighboring communities Fanas, Luzein, Furna and Jenaz.
