history
The name "Vandans" comes from ad fontanas - that means by the waters . The four torrents
- Aualatsch from Golm
- Almustrik from the Rellstal
- Mustergiel from the Valkastiel Gorge and the
- Ladritschbach from the Vensertobel
have shaped the village character and in earlier years made the population harder to deal with with mudslides and damage.
The first inhabitants of Vandans in the 10th century were the Rhaeto-Romans from the province of Raetia - which is still attested today by many Romanic field names . Further settlement was carried out by the Celts and the various tribes of German Alemanni . It was not until around 1300 that the German Walsers from the Swiss canton of Valais settled on what was still German soil.
Around 1405, during the Appenzell Wars , Montafon Castle in the Schlosstobel near Vandans was destroyed.
In 1613 and again in 1630 the plague raged in Vandans. Until 1651 Vandans belonged to Tschagguns , but the place had its own chaplain since 1519 .
In 1799 the Austrian military and the “Montafoner Schützen” under Bernhard Riedmiller marched through the Rellstal against Napoleon's troops located in neighboring Switzerland. In 1800 it was occupied by the French and from 1803 to 1809 Vandans and the whole of the Montafon belonged to Bavaria.
The Habsburgs ruled the places in Vorarlberg alternately from Tyrol and Upper Austria (Freiburg im Breisgau). From 1805 to 1814 the place belonged to Bavaria, then again to Austria. For Austrian province of Vorarlberg Vandans heard since the founding of the 1861st
Since 1905 Vandans has been connected to the Montafonerbahn line that was in operation at the time.
Flood 1910
In June 1910, the place was hit by a devastating flood of the century: There were heavy rains and the delayed snowmelt after an extremely snowy winter. The fertile valley floors were graveled and unusable for agriculture.
Vandans was particularly badly affected by the raging of the Ill , the Aualatschbach and the Rellsbach (Almustrik), while the otherwise dreaded Ladritschbach from the Vensertobel and the Mustergielbach were rather harmless this time.
At that time, more than half of the railway line in the Montafon was destroyed and between July 1910 and September 1911 a rail replacement service with horse-drawn vehicles had to be set up between Lorüns and St. Anton . The place was part of the French occupation zone in Austria from 1945 to 1955.
Population development
In 2002 the proportion of foreigners was 9.9 percent.
Until 2001, the municipality had a positive birth balance and a positive migration balance , which led to rapid population growth. From 2001 to 2011 the birth rate fell sharply and there was more emigration than immigration.
