Fontanella is a municipality in the Bludenz district in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg with 463 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020).

The municipality is located at an average of 1145  m above sea level. A. in the northernmost part of the Great Walsertal .

geography

Fontanella is the highest mountain village in the "Großes Walsertal Biosphere Park". 29.5% of the area is forested, 52.1% of the area of ​​the Alps. Due to its location at the northeastern end of the Great Walsertal, the Bregenzerwald village Damüls can be reached via the Faschinajoch .

history

The place was settled in the 14th century by Valais colonists who came to this area via Graubünden-Laterns-Damüls and belonged to the Damüls Walser court. Fontanella was first mentioned in a document in 1363 as "Funtanell". The place name is derived from a Romanic word, the diminutive of "fontana" (= well, source). It was taken over from an old healing spring in the area. The "Heilbrünnlein" is said to have been fed from an iron source. The place came to Austria in 1390 together with the Feldkirch rule.

The Habsburgs ruled the places in Vorarlberg alternately from Tyrol and Upper Austria ( Freiburg im Breisgau ). From 1805 to 1814 the place belonged to Bavaria , then again to Austria . Fontanella has belonged to the Austrian state of Vorarlberg since it was founded in 1861.

The place was part of the French occupation zone in Austria from 1945 to 1955.

Population development


The proportion of non-Austrian citizens was 5.7 percent at the end of 2002 and 5.0 percent in 2018.

The migration balance has been negative since 1981, but was offset by the strongly positive birth balance until 2001 . After 2001, the birth rate decreased and emigration increased, leading to a decrease in the population.

The Fontanella municipal council consists of 9 members. In the municipal council and mayoral elections in 2015 , the “Fontanella List” was only a single list, which subsequently provided all 9 mandataries to the municipal council. Mayor Werner Konzett was confirmed in office in the direct mayor election 2015 with 87.94% of the votes.

The coat of arms was awarded on January 27, 1970 with the following description: Two five-pointed red Valais stars in the upper silver field and a two-armed silver scales in the lower green field in the horizontally divided shield.

Economy and Infrastructure

In 2003 there were 18 commercial enterprises with 102 employees and 6 apprentices on site. There were 180 employees subject to income tax. Tourism and tourism are important. In the 2001/2002 tourism year there were a total of 70,365 overnight stays.

There is a kindergarten in Fontanella. There are (as of January 2003) 29 students on site.

Regular events

  • Obergrecht Isamännli ( triathlon ): Every year in July, the 'Obergrecht Isamännli' starts in Fontanella near Seewaldsee - a triathlon sporting event. After a swimming circuit in the lake, a running route takes you to the village center of Fontanella and then to the finish line by bike to Faschina .
