history

Wilhelm Remmer's brewery was founded in 1873 on the bowl basket . In 1903/04 the brewery was relocated to Buntentorsteinweg in Neustadt. Remmer was bought by the Beck brewery (later Beck brewery ) in 1917 .

The beer kegs were transported to and from the brewery's Schwankhalle . For a long time after 1945, the site was used as a vehicle fleet for the municipal garbage disposal and had no particular urban significance. The renovation of the old buildings, supplemented with new ones , took place in 2002 according to plans by Manfred Schomers , Rainer Schürmann and Walter Stridde.

The old buildings of the Buntentorsteinweg ensemble have served culture since then, the new buildings with an inner courtyard are residential complexes for the elderly. The newly opened public path between the old and new buildings connects the Buntentorsteinweg with the dike of the Kleiner Weser .

The architecture guide bremen explained : “The architectural and urban redefinition of a brewery area is characterized by a combination of old building conversion and new construction, which at the same time defines a mixture of functions .... The architecture of the residential buildings is visually restrained. Only the high central staircase has a great architectural gesture in a neo-rationalist manner. "

The area was made available for use by “the free professional art and artist scene of all branches” from Bremen and around. In 1992 the gradual renovation began, through which the first artists found an exhibition and presentation space. After the renovation was completed, theater, dance and music events have been taking place here since autumn 2003. In the Schwankhalle building there is a radio studio, from which the Bremen open channel " Radio Weser TV " with u. a. the shipment was sent with fluctuations .

One of the independent groups and artists who had their permanent home there under the Schwankhalle label was the Bremen Young Theater (expanded to include the Alte Liebe label for in-house productions).

In 2014, the majority of the leading and productive cultural workers at the Schwankhalle decided to withdraw from operations and Neugier eV put the management of the house open to the public. At the end of 2014, Dr. Pirkko Husemann took over the management of the Schwankhalle on the recommendation of a search committee and resolutions of the supervisory board and the general assembly of Neugier eV.
