The Schwarzsee is a mountain ridge above Zermatt in the canton of Valais in Switzerland . It is located north of the Matterhorn at an altitude of 2583  m above sea level. M. and can be reached from Furi and Furgg. The Monte Rosa massif , the Mischabel group , the Dent Blanche and the Weisshorn are located in its viewing areaand the Matterhorn. The mountain ridge is named after the small mountain lake of the same name with an area of ​​less than 0.1 km², on which the "Maria zum Schnee" chapel and the mountain station of the Schwarzseebahn are located. Schwarzsee is a starting point for climbing the Matterhorn and hiking to the Hörnlihütte , which can be reached in around two hours. In the past, Schwarzsee was only accessible via ski lifts and small cable cars . In the meantime, as part of the renaturation efforts of the Zermatt mountain railways, the old lifts have been replaced by a modern gondola lift. In the tourism industry , the place that the sun first reaches in the morning in the Zermatt ski area is marketed as the Schwarzsee paradise .

Cable car history

  • 1955: Foundation of the LZS (aerial cableway Zermatt – Schwarzsee)
  • 1955/56: Construction of the Zermatt – Furi – Schwarzsee cable car
  • 1962: Construction of the Furgg – Schwarzsee aerial cableway
  • 1982: Construction of the Zermatt – Furi six-seater gondola
  • 1991: Opening of the group cable car Furgg – Schwarzsee to replace the old cable car
  • 2002: Opening of the eighth Matterhorn-Express Zermatt – Furi – Schwarzsee gondola
  • 2009: Construction of the extension of the Matterhorn Express from Schwarzsee via Furgg to Trockener Steg . This lift replaces the old gondola lift from 1965 from Furgg to Trockener Steg as well as the group orbit Furgg – Schwarzsee. With the new lift, the Trockener Steg can be reached in 25 minutes without changing trains.
