Sebastian Kehl (2013)

Sebastian Walter Kehl (born February 13, 1980 in Fulda ) is a former German football player and today's functionary . From 2002 to 2015 he was under contract with Borussia Dortmund , won three German championships and played in two European Cup finals. In 2002 he became vice world champion with the national team. Since June 1, 2018, he has been the head of the licensed players department at Borussia Dortmund.

Career as a player

society

Sebastian Kehl started playing football at SV Lahrbach when he was five . At the age of 16 he left his native city of Fulda and moved to Hannover 96 . At the age of 18 he made his first appearances in the 2nd Bundesliga ; In total, he played 32 league games in two seasons for Lower Saxony. After being at the Carl Friedrich Gauss School in Hemmingen the High School had graduated, he took a coach Volker Finke in 2000 in the Bundesliga SC Freiburg , where he spent the next year and a half.

Kehl was active for Borussia Dortmund from January 2002 .

His star on the BVB Walk of Fame

In the second half of the season he became German champions with Borussia Dortmund . In the 2004/05 season he scored four goals in 32 games, surpassing his record at SC Freiburg. In the course of the system change at Borussia, Kehl had now reached his desired position: centrally in front of the defense.

After a duel with Hasan Salihamidžić on the first day of the 2006/07 season in the game against FC Bayern Munich, the first long injury phase of his professional career began for Kehl. The flesh wound that was caused by Salihamidžić's straddle healed only slowly and kept getting infected, so that Kehl was only able to play a Bundesliga game on February 4, 2007. Since he had to struggle with after-effects of the injury several times in the following years, he was only fully operational again since the middle of the first half of the 2007/08 season and had lost contact with the German national team, for which he had played 31 games. In the same season he was with Borussia Dortmund in the DFB Cup final in Berlin , which the team lost 2-1 to FC Bayern Munich.

Kehl was appointed team captain by the new BVB coach Jürgen Klopp in the training camp before the 2008/09 season. On May 16, 2009 he scored two goals in a Bundesliga game for the first time in his professional career in a 6-0 win against Arminia Bielefeld.

Due to several injuries, he was only able to play six games in the Bundesliga in the 2010/11 season ; Nevertheless, in May 2011 he became German champions for the second time after 2002 with BVB. The third championship followed in 2012 after he had developed into a top performer again in 25 missions. He also won on May 12, the DFB Cup - the final against Bayern Munich 5: 2 and the first double of his career and also his club. In April 2013, BVB extended the expiring contract for another year until June 2014. On March 23, 2014, he extended his contract for another year and announced the end of his career after the 2014/15 season. Before his last season, Kehl resigned as BVB team captain after six years . On May 30, 2015, Kehl ended his playing career after the DFB Cup final against VfL Wolfsburg at the age of 35.

He scored his first goal in the DFB Cup for Borussia Dortmund on April 7, 2015 with the 3-2 winner in the quarter-finals against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim in the 107th minute.

National team

Kehl took part with the U-17 national team at the 1997 World Cup in Egypt , where he scored one goal in six games. In 1998 he became vice European champion with the U-18 national team .

Kehl was a German national team player for many years. His first game in the national jersey was the 2-0 victory over Slovakia on May 29, 2001 in Bremen . He participated with the national team at the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea , the 2004 European Championship in Portugal and the 2006 World Cup in Germany . The game for third place against Portugal , which ended 3-1, was Kehl's last of 31 games in the national shirt. Because of his injuries, he did not make it into the national team.

Career as a functionary

Since the European Football Championship in 2016 , Kehl has worked as a football expert for ZDF .

On June 1, 2018, Kehl took over the newly created position of head of the licensed player department at Borussia Dortmund . For this he ended his engagement with ZDF.

criticism

His move from SC Freiburg to Borussia made headlines because in the summer of 2001 he had given FC Bayern Munich a promise to move by “2003 at the latest” (the time when his contract with SC Freiburg expired). For the commitment he received cash in the millions. When he decided to move to Borussia Dortmund in winter, he returned the bonus money to FC Bayern with interest. This led to allegations on the part of FC Bayern against Kehl, as the manager of FC Bayern, Uli Hoeneß , took the view that Kehl had already signed a valid contract with the club. On the Dortmund side, Michael Meier criticized FC Bayern's practice of providing players from foreign clubs with high bonuses in advance, even though they would have to play against Bayern several times with their current clubs. In an arbitration meeting, the clubs agreed to resolve the transfer dispute. Kehl then publicly apologized to FC Bayern and moved from SC Freiburg to Borussia Dortmund in January 2002.
