Serge Aubin (born February 15, 1975 in Val-d'Or , Québec ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and current coach . Since May 2019 he has been the head coach of the Eisbären Berlin in the German Ice Hockey League . In the course of his playing career, Aubin has been in the National Hockey League for the Colorado Avalanche , Columbus Blue Jackets and Atlanta Thrashers , for the Genève-Servette HC and Friborg-Gottéron in the National League A and for the Hamburg Freezers in the German Ice Hockey League active.
Career
Player career
The Pittsburgh Penguins selected Aubin in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft in the seventh round in 161th place, after spending his junior years in the Québec Major Junior Hockey League with the Drummondville Voltigeurs and the Granby Bisons . From 1995 he played for various minor league teams, including for the Hampton Roads Admirals in the East Coast Hockey League and in the American Hockey League for Syracuse Crunch . Pittsburgh dissolved the contract with Aubin in December 1998 and the Colorado Avalanche signed him as a free agent .
After this change he went on the ice for the Hershey Bears , but he was able to make his NHL debut in the jersey of the Avalanche. The following season he spent in Hershey, but was called up for 15 games in the NHL squad and knew how to convince, so that he completed the entire play-offs for the Stanley Cup for Colorado. The Avalanche lost the Western Conference final against the Dallas Stars 4-3 and did not extend their contract with Aubin, so that the Columbus Blue Jackets signed him.
Aubin played his first full NHL season in 2000/01 , which was his highest point with 13 goals and 17 assists. After a second season in Columbus, he returned to the Colorado Avalanche as a free agent, but a year later he was put on the waiver list and signed by the Atlanta Thrashers . In the 2003/04 season he reached 25 points scorer in 66 games.
During the lockout of the 2004/05 NHL season , Aubin was one of 388 NHL players who bridged the strike at European clubs. He signed with HC Servette Geneve in Switzerland, but returned to the Thrashers in the 2005/06 season and scored seven goals in 74 games and gave 17 assists. After the season he received another offer from Geneva and was signed for three years. In the playoffs of the NLA 2006/07 Servette was eliminated in the first round - Serge Aubin then went on loan to EHC Biel in the National League B together with Kirby Law to support the EHC in the playoff finals and the relegation games. From the 2009/10 season , Aubin played for Friborg-Gottéron before moving to the Hamburg Freezers in 2011 .
In the European Trophy game on September 2, 2012 against the Eisbären Berlin , Aubin sustained a complicated fracture of the basal joint of his left thumb when he blocked a shot. After several operations and a still limited function of the joint, Aubin ended his professional career on January 15, 2013 with immediate effect. In total, Aubin played 51 DEL games for the Freezers from 2011 to the end of his career, in which he scored 14 goals and 20 assists.
Career as a coach
For the 2013/14 season , the Canadian was employed as an assistant coach by the Freezers and, shortly after the start of the 2014/15 season, replaced the dismissed Benoit Laporte as head coach of the Hamburg DEL club. After he was able to consolidate the team in terms of sport and lead it into the top third of the table, his contract in Hamburg was extended until 2017. At the Germany Cup in November 2014, he acted as the assistant coach of the Canadian national team, in 2015 he was the assistant coach of the German team - also at the Deutschland Cup Selection. In May 2016, the end came in Hamburg: The Freezers did not apply for a license for the DEL season 2016/17, Aubin, all players and employees became unemployed.
Shortly after the end of his tenure in Hamburg, Aubin was introduced as the new head coach of Vienna Capitals from the EBEL and signed a two-year contract there at the beginning of June 2016. With the Vienna Capitals, he became the EBEL master in his first season as a trainer at the Capitals in April 2017. At the end of December 2017, the ZSC Lions from the Swiss National League announced Aubin's commitment as head coach starting with the 2018/19 season. On January 14, 2019, he was released from his office after performing on average.
On May 3, 2019, he was introduced as the new head coach of the Eisbären Berlin and received a two-year contract.
