Solothurn Film Festival
The Solothurn Film Festival is the most important film festival for Swiss film . Since 1966, in the last week of January in Solothurn, they have been presenting a representative selection of Swiss fiction, documentary and short films in the “Panorama Switzerland” program. The audience and the film industry will discuss the films shown and Swiss film culture in round tables and podium events. With over 65,000 viewers annually (2020: 66,300 admissions), the Solothurn Film Festival is one of the most renowned cultural events in Switzerland. The "Prix de Soleure" of the Solothurn Film Days is considered one of the most important Swiss culture prizes. In addition to the two main sponsors, Swisscom and Swiss Life, the retrospective of Swiss films is supported by the main media partner SRG SSR, the public sector and numerous other partners.
history
The Solothurn Film Festival is one of the oldest film festivals in Switzerland and the most important festival for Swiss film. In 1966 the Solothurn Film Guild organized a conference entitled “Swiss Film Today”. The aim of this event was to create new ideas and inspiration for young, independent Swiss filmmakers. From this the Swiss Society of Solothurn Film Days (SGSF) was formed, which organizes the film days as an association.
Even though the film days have existed for over half a century, there have only been three changes of direction in their history: Stephan Portmann headed the festival from 1967, he was replaced by Ivo Kummer in 1987 . After Kummer was appointed head of the film section of the Federal Office for Culture (BAK), Seraina Rohrer was elected as his successor. In April 2019 it was announced that Seraina Rohrer was moving to the Swiss cultural foundation Pro Helvetia as a member of the management team and head of the new Innovation and Society department.
On August 1, 2019, the Swiss film author and before that Swiss and international producer and film curator Anita Hugi took over the management of the Solothurn Film Festival.
Between 1998 and 2008, Solothurn was also the founding and venue for the award ceremony of the Swiss Film Prize . Since then, the nominees for the Swiss Film Prize have been chosen and presented in Solothurn at the Film Festival.
The paper and photo holdings of the Solothurn Film Days have been archived in the Cinémathèque suisse since 2017 .
In 2019 the Solothurn Film Festival launched “filmo”, the first online edition of Swiss films. «Filmo» brings recognized key works to existing video-on-demand platforms. The edition is constantly being expanded, offers bonus material and is available in three national languages. The pioneering project initiated by the Solothurn Film Festival is made possible by Engagement Migros, the Migros Group's development fund.
program
Panorama Switzerland
The "Panorama Switzerland" program is the heart of the Solothurn Film Festival and presents a selection of current Swiss productions from all language regions, all genres and lengths. The program shows the diverse film industry in Switzerland and includes documentaries, fiction, experimental, short and animation films as well as music clips.
Rencontre
Every year the special program “Rencontre” honors a personality in Swiss film who can look back on an important and extensive work. The program shows selected works of her creativity and enables a personal encounter. The Solothurn Film Festival thus offers the opportunity to gain in-depth insight into the work of well-known Swiss cineastes and to meet them.

focus
Since 2012 the Solothurn Film Festival has been presenting the special program “Focus” on a thematic focus with Swiss and international films and reference to current developments. The focus is on the current audiovisual landscape at home and abroad in order to discover new narrative methods, framework conditions, forms of production and distribution. As part of the “Focus”, there will also be podiums and workshops aimed at stimulating an exchange between experts and the public.

The “focus” is a further development of the earlier “Invitation” program, which was in the context of cultural exchange and cooperation with neighboring European regions. While individual directors from abroad were initially invited in the 1960s, in the 1990s it was entire guest countries who were presented in Solothurn.
Histoires du cinéma suisse
The “Histoires du cinéma suisse” program presents selected works from Swiss film history and has in the past been devoted to the global success of the Bolex camera, early travel films and the Swiss mountains as a film set. In 2020, the "Cinéma Copines" program honored the work of the three French-speaking Swiss film pioneers Patricia Moraz , Christine Pascal and Paule Muret .
Future Lab
Technological development promotes cinematic forms and formats that are increasingly going beyond the scope of conventional cinema. The “Future Lab” offers selected Swiss projects, such as interactive film or virtual reality, a platform.
Supporting program
With its own events and in cooperation with various Swiss film institutions and film associations, a diverse supporting program such as information events, special screenings for children as well as topic-specific panel discussions and workshops on questions of Swiss film culture and the film industry takes place during the film days. These events specifically address current issues in Swiss film culture and are aimed at filmmakers and the audience interested in film.
The “Film Club” podium, which invites international film critics to discuss current Swiss films, is an integral part of the event.
Awards and honors
Numerous film prizes are awarded on the occasion of the Solothurn Film Festival. On the one hand, the awards are aimed directly at filmmakers and their works, but also honor personalities in the wider Swiss film environment, who actively contribute to the success of national filmmaking with their commitment. All award winners are listed on the official homepage of the Film Days.
Prix de Soleure - Jury Prize
The Prix de Soleure, endowed with CHF 60,000, was first awarded in 2009. It honors an outstanding Swiss cinema film that impresses with its pronounced humanism and presents it in an impressive way. The selection committee of the Solothurn Film Festival nominates five to ten films each year. An annually reassembled jury determines the winning film.
