The 9th Summer Paralympics took place in Barcelona from September 3 to September 14, 1992 . The games were played after the 1992 Summer Olympics . The organizing committee had previously tightened the rules and qualification hurdles, which led to a reduction in the number of participating athletes, but also raised the athletic level.

The games mascot was a stylized runner named Petra .

Ceremonies

Opening ceremony

The opening ceremony took place in the Olympic Stadium in Barcelona on September 3rd. Among the 65,000 visitors were IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch , King Juan Carlos and Queen Sophia of Spain . The flame was lit by the handicapped archer Antonio Rebello with an arrow.

sports

Medals were fought for in 15 sports. In wheelchair tennis, which had been introduced as a demonstration sport 4 years earlier, medals were awarded for the first time.
