The Spanish national team made its debut at the 1954 European Baseball Championship in Antwerp . After a 10: 4 win against Germany and a 4: 7 defeat in the final against Italy, the selection took second place. A year later, the Iberians won their only title to date, at the European Championships in their own country, the team won the gold medal. Thus, the Spaniards were the only ones able to break the supremacy of the two dominant nations of European baseball, the Netherlands and Italy, alongside Belgium. Since then, the team has achieved one silver medal and 14 bronze medals in continental tournaments. The Iberians qualified for world championships five times, in 1988, 1998, 2005, 2007 and 2009 , the best results were two 12th places in 1988 and 2009. The team took part in the Intercontinental Cup four times, in 1991, 1993, 1995 and 1997, the best result was two eighth places in 1991 and 1997.
At the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona , the team took on the role of host and finished eighth and last, but was able to celebrate a surprising 7-6 win against Puerto Rico in the final seventh game .
One of the greatest successes of the Spanish national team was the qualification and participation in the World Baseball Classic , the most important international tournament for national teams, in 2013 . There, after three defeats against Venezuela , Puerto Rico and the eventual tournament winner Dominican Republic , the team was eliminated in the preliminary round and finally finished 15th. The team was in the spotlight of the Spanish media not only because of their first participation in the tournament, but also because of the fact that only one of the 28 players, Eric González, was actually born in Spain. Eleven members of the Iberian squad were from Venezuela, seven from Cuba , six from the United States and three from the Dominican Republic. 15 players were Spanish citizens, the remainder were also eligible to start as children or grandchildren of Spaniards according to the tournament regulations.
