Local history

The oldest evidence and thus the first mention of Spexard goes back to a leveling caster from the Herzebrock monastery, which was created around 1088 during the reorganization of the monastery by the sovereign Bishop Benno II of Osnabrück . The local jubilee “925 Years Spexard” in 2013 is based on this leveling roller.

Spexard belonged to the Reckenberg office , an exclave of the Prince Diocese of Osnabrück . From 1524 an open power struggle arose between the rule of Rheda under Count Konrad von Tecklenburg-Schwerin and the prince-bishopric over the borders and rights of the rule of Rheda. The Reckenberg office was militarily weak due to its geographical location without direct connection to the prince-bishopric and initially offered little resistance to the territorial claims of the count, so that the Lords of Rheda gained considerable influence in the parish of Gütersloh.

After the Count's death in 1557, the disputes were settled in the Bielefeld Recess in 1565 and in the Wiedenbrück Treaty of June 9, 1565 and the boundaries were redefined: The farmers in Blankenhagen , Pavenstädt and Nordhorn, including the not yet independent farmers in Sundern , fell under the rule of Rheda, the farming communities Avenwedde , Kattenstroth and Spexard remained with the Principality of Osnabrück.

Partly at the same time, between 1508 and 1583, the prince-bishopric also had to fight border disputes on the eastern border of the Reckenberg office. The county of Rietberg was able to successfully claim a larger area of the Spexard farmers.

1803 Osnabrück was after Reichsdeputationshauptschluss the electorate of Hanover slammed the turn of 1806 Prussia fell.

After Napoleon's victory over Prussia, the “Spexard farmers” belonged to the canton Wiedenbrück in the Paderborn district of the Fulda department in the Kingdom of Westphalia between 1807 and 1813 . In 1815 the former Reckenberg office finally fell to Prussia. Spexard belonged to the large community of Avenwedde in the Wiedenbrück district and had just 249 inhabitants in 1818; by the establishment of the German Empire in 1871, the population had doubled to 500. On December 10, 1888, the new municipality of Kattenstroth-Spexard was created by outsourcing it from the municipality of Avenwedde.

The municipality of Kattenstroth-Spexard was dissolved on April 1, 1910. The municipality part of Kattenstroth moved to Gütersloh , while Spexard formed an independent new municipality. In 1914 the Avenwedde office was formed with the three communities Avenwedde, Friedrichsdorf and Spexard.

On January 1, 1970, the municipality of Spexard, then with a population of 4,862, was incorporated into the city of Gütersloh . The district of Wiedenbrück was added to the newly founded district of Gütersloh in 1973 as part of the North Rhine-Westphalian regional reform .

In 1979, after several visits to the GDR, the Friends of the Rhön Club Simmershausen was founded, a hiking club in Thuringia whose members are committed to the preservation of customs and nature in the Rhön . This marks the beginning of a kind of unofficial city partnership between Spexard and Simmershausen . Since the reunification, clubs and delegations from both places have been visiting each other regularly for local, community and sports festivals.

In 1993, the Meier to Berens farmhouse, originally intended for demolition, was dismantled, relocated and inaugurated at its new location on January 21, 1995. As the “Spexard farmhouse”, it now serves as a meeting place for Spexard associations and has become the district's landmark .
