Although the main statute of the city of Verl does not specify any districts and Sürenheide is not mentioned, today Sürenheide speaks of the settlement area around Thaddäusstrasse, Pausheide, the Helfgerd settlement north of Verler See and the area between Sürenheider and Bielefelder Strasse.

geography

Located in the northwest of the city of Verl, the Sürenheide borders the Gütersloh districts of Spexard and Avenwedde . There is a connection to the A2 motorway Hanover - Oberhausen at a short distance in Gütersloh-Spexard. Sürenheide is part of the Teutoburg Forest upstream Senne landscape .

In Sürenheide, the Knisterbach rises at a height of around 89 meters . In addition, with the Ölbach and the Menkebach, two other rivers run over the area of the village. In the north, the Dalkebach partially forms the border to the neighboring town of Gütersloh .

history

The settlement initially only consisted of agricultural farms and small-scale farms of köttern and heuerlings who found it difficult to make a living on the barren sandy soil. The actual settlement did not begin until the beginning of the 1950s. In lengthy negotiations, building land was wrested from the landowners, which was urgently needed so that the housing shortage could be alleviated in the post-war period. There were essentially four settlement areas that are spatially separated. Nevertheless, it can be said that in the meantime a center has arisen at the level of the local elementary school. Two new settlement areas make this clear. They also allow at least two of the old settlement areas to grow together. Initially, especially expellees from the German eastern regions settled here.

In the settlement area of Helfgerd (Seesiedlung), the Verler See was built in the 1980s, near which is the functioning water mill "Bunten Mühle" on the Ölbach. The mill can be visited annually on German Milling Day and by appointment.

As a result of the municipal reorganization on January 1, 1970, Sürenheide, which until then belonged to the municipality of Varensell , became a district of Verl.

Churches

There are two churches in the district:

Jude Thaddeus Church

The Judas Thaddäus Church, built between 1953 and 1954, is the Roman Catholic church in the district. The three Catholic parishes in Verl, Sankt Maria Immaculata in Kaunitz , Sankt Anna in Verl and Sankt Judas Thaddäus in Sürenheide, have belonged to a joint pastoral association in the Archdiocese of Paderborn since January 1st, 2001 .

Church of the Resurrection

Church of the Resurrection

The Protestant Church of the Resurrection, built in 1966, is a hall church in the modern style . The floor plan of the white plastered building is formed by an irregular hexagon. The church does not have a tower, but a roof turret that can be seen from afar , at the top of which a gold-plated ball and a simple cross are attached. Before the church was built, Protestant services were held in the predominantly Catholic Sürenheide in a classroom of the St. George School. Since 1978 the community has had an organ from Detlef Kleuker with ten registers , which are divided into two manuals and a pedal . Since autumn 2015, services have only taken place once a month in Sürenheide due to the low attendance at church services.

The parish Verl with its two churches heard within the Evangelical Church of Westphalia the Church Gütersloh on.
