Stephan Engels (born September 6, 1960 in Niederkassel ) is a former German soccer player . He has been working as a coach since the end of his active career.

career

Engels played his first professional season for the billy goats as a youth at 1. FC Köln and in 1978/79 . The midfielder quickly developed into a regular player and made his debut in the senior national team in 1982 . In the same year he was on demand as a player in the extended squad for the World Cup in Spain. For the DFB , he played eight A-internationals and on April 18, 1987 in Cluj-Napoca in the 0-1 defeat against the selection of Romania, an international match for the Olympic team .

Engel's greatest success was winning the DFB Cup in 1983 . Twice he helped FC runner-up, another highlight of his career were the games in the UEFA Cup in 1986 , especially the finals against Real Madrid (then with outward and return leg held) in which the Cologne could not prevail.

Engels scored 39 goals in 236 Bundesliga games. During the winter break of the 1988/89 season he moved to the second division for city rivals SC Fortuna Köln . After numerous injuries, he ended his career during the 1989/90 season and became a coach. In the 1995/1996 season he was head coach of 1. FC Cologne. He took over the team after the second game day from Morten Olsen ; however, he was replaced by Peter Neururer after the 25th matchday , as he did not have the success he had hoped for. Since then he has never worked as a Bundesliga coach again. He remained coach of the FC second team until the 1998/99 season. In 1999 he moved to Wuppertaler SV as a manager . In 2004/05 he was coach of SCB Viktoria Köln for one season . In 2005/06 he returned to 1. FC Köln, worked as head scout and later as youth coordinator. From April 22, 2013 he was the coach of the U-21 youth team at 1. FC Cologne . After the 2014/15 season, the collaboration was ended at Stephan Engels' request.

He plays in the traditional team of 1. FC Köln and has been chairman of TuS Mondorf 1910/1920 eV since 2010
