Stepping Out is a 1991 Canadian-American film.

action

Mavis Turner is a former Broadway star charged with preparing amateur dancers for a benefit show in the province. The film tells the everyday problems of the individual amateur dancers, who with difficulty undergo rehearsal work on the tap dance and ultimately conjure up an appealing performance on the stage. For Mavis Turner, who is expecting a child from a rock star, work is a rewarding distraction from her own problems.

background

The film was supposed to open in theaters in April 1991 when Minnelli's stage program Liza Stepping Out at Radio City Music Hall started, but the premiere was delayed due to internal staff changes at the Paramount Pictures film studio . Despite good reviews, the film project was denied commercial success because Paramount awarded Stepping Out to only seven American cinema chains. Studio president Stanley R. Jaffe justified this decision by the lack of trust in the audience. It is not sufficiently interested in the flick to make it a hit movie. Critic Clive Barnes praised the "wonderful, shiny" Minnelli and the New York Daily News said it was "good to see her again". The film is considered to be the last with Liza Minnelli as the protagonist within her film career.

Reviews

  • Lexicon of international film : Not a musical , but rather a " soap opera " with dance interludes, in which all the world's problems are shifted to seven people. As a result, it is schematic, but the drawing of the characters is quite sensitive. Liza Minnelli in particular has a captivating aura of unobtrusive professionalism.

Awards

In 1992 Julie Walters was nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the BAFTA Awards.
