The tram Herne - Castrop-Rauxel GmbH is a local transport company of the city of Herne . Contrary to its name, the HCR , as it is known for short, no longer operates trams. As a member of the Rhein-Ruhr transport association , the Eastern Ruhr Area (KÖR) cooperates with the neighboring companies Vestische , DSW (Dortmunder Stadtwerke AG) and Bogestra and, since 2017, with VER (Ennepe-Ruhr transport company) - in 2019 the HST ( Hagener Straßenbahn AG) and in 2020 the Ruhrbahn (Essen) will be added.

history

The tram Herne - Castrop-Rauxel GmbH was founded on August 1st, 1905 by the municipalities of Herne and Sodingen as a company under civil law with the company Straßenbahn Herne-Sodingen . Originally, the communities wanted to set up a trolleybus route between the two places. These plans were after the O-bus operation of BSM in Monheim was visited again shelved and it was the decision to build a tram line . On December 20, 1906, the line between the office building in Sodingen and the Shamrock colliery in Herne went into operation. On September 18, 1909, the Castrop community joined the society. From the tram Herne Sodingen was streetcar Herne Sodingen-Castrop and the enlargement to Castrop-Cathedral Square was attacked.

The 4.6-kilometer route was connected to BOGESTRA , Vestische Straßenbahnen GmbH , the municipal tram company of the district of Gelsenkirchen , the tram of the city of Herne , the Westphalian tram , the Märkische trams and the trams of the Dortmund district . In 1912 the line in Herne was extended to the local train station. During the First World War there were repeated difficulties, but operations could continue.

In 1921, when the new facilities in Herne were completed, the level crossing was no longer necessary. The route was also expanded to two-track in several sections.

The Second World War had little impact on tram operations. There was only damage from artillery fire. Two wagons that were misused as anti-tank traps also fell victim to the war.

The poor maintenance of the track system caused greater damage. In 1949 bus operations were to begin. Due to its lines, which operated parallel to the tram, the tram had to be discontinued on September 30, 1959. Since then, the Herne-Castrop-Rauxel tram , or HCR for short , as it was called from May 3, 1928 - with the addition of GmbH since January 1, 1954 - has been a pure bus operation. Part of the traffic area is now being developed by BOGESTRA.
