The VII Targa Abruzzi , also known as the 24-hour race of Pescara 1934 , was a sports car race and took place on August 13, 1934.

The race

In 1934 the organizers and officials of the Targa Abruzzi decided to change the distance of the race. This year, a 24-hour race based on comparable racing events in Le Mans and Spa-Francorchamps took place at the Circuito di Pescara . The attempt to establish a permanent event like in France and Belgium failed, however. Only one more time, in 1935 , was a 24-hour race in Pescara.

The circuit and road races in Italy in the 1930s were, with a few exceptions, mainly contested by Italian racing teams and drivers. The conversion of the race in Pescara to the long 24-hour distance brought non-Italians to the start there for the first time. Among these drivers were the two Britons Earl Howe and Tim Rose-Richards , as well as the French Marcel Mongin and Raymond Sommer . They all had great experience in 24-hour races and had great successes in this racing format. Howe won Le Mans together with Tim Birkin in 1931 . Rose-Richards finished third at Le Mans in three consecutive years, 1931, 1932 and 1933 , and Mongin was second overall on the Sarthe in 1926 and 1937 . Raymond Sommer came to Italy as a two-time Le Mans winner in 1932 he won with Luigi Chinetti and in 1933 as a partner of Tazio Nuvolari ; with the Italian he also started at Tara, but retired.

While Mongin, who shared the cockpit of an Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Monza with his countrywoman Hélene Delange, retired , Howe and Rose-Richards took seventh place overall. In the overall standings, Scuderia Ferrari celebrated a triple victory.
