Terje Venaas

Terje Venaas (born March 30, 1947 in Molde ) is a Norwegian jazz bassist.

Live and act

Venaas originally played the tenor saxophone, but switched to the double bass in 1962. He was a member of the Storyville Jazz Quintet and the Åge Venås Quartet and performed at the Molde Jazz Festival in 1967. In the same year he went to Oslo, where he worked with Espen Rud , Jan Garbarek and Calle Neumann and made recordings with Terje Rypdal in 1968 .

In the 1970s he played in various jazz bands at the same time, including the group Bash , the sextet of Christian Reim , the trio of Terje Bjørklund , the jazz rock group Adonis , the quartets of Karin Krog , Bjørn Johansen , Laila Dalseth , Ditlef Eckhoff and Bjarne Nerem , Magni Wentzels Quintet, the Knut Riisnæs / Lars Jansson Quartet and the Jon Eberson / Jon Balke Quartet . He also made recordings with Christian Eggen , Roy Hellvin , Laila Dalseth, Ketil Bjørnstad and Pål Thowsen and performed at festivals with Tore Engstrøm , Torgrim Sollid , Alf Kjellman , Nils Petter Nyrén , Baby Ma Rainey , Louisiana Red , George Russell and Jan Garbarek on.

Since 1979 he has been a member of the Laila Dalseth Trio; he also worked in the 1980s with the bands of Christian Reim , the quintets of Atle Hammer and Thorgeir Stubø , Espen Rud's group Kråbøl and the Eivin Sannes Trio. In 1982 he received the Norwegian Gammlengprisen in the category studio musician; In 1988 he received the Buddy Prize .

Since 1992 Venaas has been a permanent member of Christian Reim's quartet and the group VSOB ( Vigleik Storaas And Band). In 1993 he released the album Toner fra Romsdal with the singer Ingeborg Hungnes . This was followed by recordings with Karin Krog (1994), Trond Bjertnes and Frode Barth (1994), Staffan William-Olsson (1995) and Nils Einar Vinjor (1997). In the late 1990s, Venaas lived in Thailand.

Since 2002 he stayed in Oslo again, where he a. a. on the albums Bjørn Johansen in memoriam (2003), As Time Goes by (with Nora Brockstedt , 2003-04), Core Business (with Louis Stewart , 2004) and Sakte sanger (with Anne Lande and Per Husby, 2006).
