Moscow Domodedovo Airport

The terrorist attack at Moscow Domodedovo Airport occurred on January 24, 2011 at 4:32 p.m. Moscow time . The suicide attack killed 36 people and injured another 152 people, 58 of whom had to be hospitalized.

Possible perpetrators

A few hours after the explosion , a manhunt was issued for three suspects. Security circles and terrorism experts assumed that the attack is related to the conflict in the North Caucasus . According to the police, the explosive device was brought to the scene by two people. Both people, a man and a woman, were killed in the explosion. According to Vladimir Putin , the perpetrators cannot be linked to Chechnya .

On January 29, Russian authorities reported that the suicide bomber had been identified. It was a 20-year-old from the North Caucasus . Further details of the perpetrator were not given in order not to endanger the further investigation. The masterminds and accomplices are still wanted.

On February 5, the Interfax agency announced that the conspirators were, according to the authorities, three men from the village of Ali-Yurt in Ingushetia . These are said to have left the village a few days before the attack and traveled to Moscow. Arrest warrants were issued. A few days later, the Chechen rebel leader Doku Khamatovich Umarov assumed political responsibility for the attack.

On February 9, the Russian security authorities arrested the brother and sister of the alleged assassin Magomed Evlojew and one other person. The suspects are said to have helped prepare the attack.

Victim

According to the Slovakian Embassy in Moscow, the Slovak actress Zuzana Fialová was injured by the Slovak National Theater . The 29-year-old Ukrainian theater director and playwright Anna Jablonskaja was also killed in the attack . One of the British victims was Gordon Cousland, 39, an analyst and board member of the British company CACI . According to the authorities, among the dead were three citizens of Kyrgyzstan , Tajikistan and Uzbekistan and two British citizens, a German and two Austrians. The German victim was a 34-year-old business economist from the Vaillant Group in Cologne. The Austrian victims are a 49-year-old Viennese woman and a 42-year-old woman from Linz who is employed by Bene AG and who was on the victim lists for some time as a Bulgarian due to his dual citizenship .

Reactions

Russia's then President Dmitri Anatolyevich Medvedev ordered the security forces at traffic hubs across the country to be on the alert. After the attack, the MICEX fell two percent on the stock exchange . Medvedev also moved his departure for the meeting of the World Economic Forum in the Swiss Davos to a later date. He canceled his planned opening speech.

Rawil Gainutdin , chairman of the Council of Muftis of Russia , said: "Innocent people have been killed and doctors are fighting for the lives of the victims in the hospitals"; the perpetrators would go to hell .

International reactions

  • NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen was shocked: I deeply condemn this appalling act . Terrorism is a common threat that we must face together ... NATO expresses its solidarity with the Russian people and the government.
  • US President Barack Obama called the attack a deliberate attack against innocent civilians. Obama underlined the solidarity of the United States with Russia. We share your grief and stand by your side in our common fight against those who use terrorism for political ends.
  • The President of the European Parliament , Jerzy Buzek , was shocked. Terrorism and violence can never be justified. EU Commission President José Manuel Barroso called the suicide attack pathetic .
  • UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned the suicide attack: It was a deplorable act against innocent people and expressed his deepest condolences to the families concerned.

Flight operations

The incoming flights were diverted to the other Moscow airports Vnukowo and Sheremetyevo immediately after the attack . According to Interfax , the airport was reopened after a 20-minute interruption.
