The Pacific is a ten-part miniseries of the American pay-TV -Senders HBO from 2010. The series is a counterpart to nine years earlier produced miniseries Band of Brothers - We were like brothers and was like this from Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg as Executive Producer produces. As the title suggests, it's about the Pacific theater of war during World War II and the hostilities of the United States Marine Corps there .

The Pacific is primarily about the different experiences of three Marines , Eugene Sledge , Robert Leckie and John Basilone , who served in various regiments of the 1st Marine Division.

production

President Barack Obama before a broadcast of The Pacific at the White House Family Theater on March 11, 2010. Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg are in the front row.

The recordings for the individual episodes of the series began in August 2007 in Australia . The main locations were Port Douglas (Queensland) , Melbourne and rural Victoria . The budget was about $ 217 million. This makes The Pacific the most expensive television series ever shot in Australia. In April 2009 it was announced that the two-year filming was about to end and that the series would premiere in the United States in March 2010. The Australian daily newspaper The Herald Sun puts the number of jobs created by the shooting at around 4,000. In Germany, the series was first broadcast by Kabel eins between July 15 and September 16, 2010 .

action

The actions are primarily based on two memoirs by war veterans of the Pacific War . Old school: The Second World War at the other end of the world. Memories of Eugene Sledge and Helmet for My Pillow by Robert Leckie confronted the producers with experiences close to the war. In addition, the plot is based on China Marine , also by Sledge, and Red Blood, Black Sand , the memories of Chuck Tatum, who fought alongside John Basilone in the Battle of Iwojima . These autobiographical elements are framed by historical events, such as the battles for Guadalcanal , Peleliu , Okinawa and Iwojima . The focus is always on relatively few individual fates within a group of marines. It paints a dirty, realistic picture of the war and the effects it has on the soldiers. Due to the fanaticism of the Japanese soldiers in particular, the marines are becoming more and more hateful and brutalizing.

The fights are also shown realistically. Instead of action-packed hand-to-hand combat, there are more impersonal long-range battles, with considerably more time being spent outside of the fighting.
