Thomas Carmichael Hindman (born January 28, 1828 in Knoxville , Tennessee , † September 27, 1868 in Helena , Arkansas ) was an officer in the US Army , lawyer and politician and major general in the Confederate Army .

Life

Thomas Carmichael Hindman initially served as a lieutenant and later as a captain in the Mexican-American War (1846 to 1848). After the war, he studied law , worked as a lawyer in Ripley , Mississippi, and was active in politics. So he was from 1854 to 1856 the Mississippi House of Representatives and was from 1859 to 1860 Congressman of the Democratic Party of Arkansas.

After the outbreak of war he did not accept his re-election to Congress and instead set up the so-called "Hindman's Legion", of which he was also the commander. He fought during the war at Shiloh (wounded) and Prairie Grove , Chickamauga (wounded), Chattanooga and Kennesaw Mountain (wounded). He was promoted to Brigadier General on September 28, 1861 and major general on April 28, 1862 .

After the end of the war, Hindman fled to Mexico and was shot through a window in his house on September 27, 1868 in Helena, Arkansas. Nobody was held responsible for this crime. As a lawyer, Hindman was a representative of a strongly conservative character, also on the issue of the position of Afro-Americans, which earned him many enemies.
