Thomas Giessing (born March 19, 1961 in Rhede , Borken district ) is a former German athlete . He was European champion and Olympic participant.

Life

Giessing - starting for Germany - won gold at the European Junior Championships in Bydgoszcz with the 4 x 400 meter relay . In 1981 and 1982 he was German junior champion over 400 meters .

At the European Championships in 1982 in Athens he won the gold medal in the Federal Republic of Germany's 4 x 400 meter relay in 3: 00.51 min: ( Erwin Skamrahl , Harald Schmid , Thomas Giessing, Hartmut Weber ). In the 400-meter run of these European championships, he finished eighth (48.70 s). In 1984 he finished third at the German Championships and qualified for the Olympic Games . In Los Angeles he was used in the run-up to the 4-by-400-meter relay, which was eliminated in the intermediate run.

In 1986 Giessing switched to the 800 meter run and came third at the German championships. At the European Championships in 1986 , he fell in the semifinals. In 1988 Giessing then won the German championship title over 800 meters, but could not qualify for the Olympic Games .

Thomas Giessing belonged to the LAZ Rhede sports club . In his playing days he was 1.97 m tall and weighed 85 kg. He completed an apprenticeship as a banker and a savings bank degree and became a board member at various banks.
