features

The body length of the holotype of Tosanoides obama is 6.15 centimeters. The fish are egg-shaped and have a yellowish red to bright red color. Females and younger animals are slightly lighter in color in their overall appearance. Only the abdominal area is whitish. Beside and under the black eye short, narrow, yellow bands run to the pectoral fin. Another thin yellow stripe begins at the gill covers and extends below the dorsal fin to the back of the body. In males, a large circular yellow spot stands out at the end of the dorsal fin. Anal and pelvic fins are colored magenta or yellow, the caudal fin is translucent yellow.

Tosanoides obama differs from the other Tosanoides species in color and in certain morphological features, such as the number of pore-shaped lateral line scales , pectoral fin rays, snout length, dorsal fin dorsal lengths and dorsal fin profile. DNA barcoding analyzes show 9.5 to 10% uncorrected sequence divergence in comparison to the two other described tosanoid species Tosanoides filamentosus and Tosanoides flavofasciatus .
