(2009)

Total damage is the first music album of the German rapper Tony D . It was released on September 14, 2007 on the independent label Aggro Berlin . Tony was able to enter the top 25 of the German album charts with his debut. The album was indexed in November 2009 and is no longer allowed to be sold to the public.

Emergence

After Tony D signed an artist contract with Aggro Berlin in 2005 and increased his level of awareness through his participation in the sampler Aggro Ansage Nr. 5 , the rapper had to take a break in 2006 due to a knee injury and was only occasionally friends with guest posts on albums. Hop musicians represented. In early 2007 Tony D began work on his first solo album. He completed this in May 2007.

Musical style

Tony D is the best known representative of the German-speaking crunk . This sub-genre of hip-hop comes from the southern United States of America and is characterized by the fact that the performers often shout the lyrics. The lyrics are accordingly simple, which is often criticized by critics. Tony D describes Totalschaden as the first German crunk album.

“I never felt the need to put my whole life into my lyrics. I mean, people can know about it, I'm not hiding anything. But it's not my motive to make music. I'm more interested in creating my own world with music. And it should be fun. One should not mourn hearing them. I don't want to make anyone think either, enough other people are already doing that. And there have to be exceptions. How boring would German rap be otherwise? "

- Tony D about his music

Versions

Totalschaden appeared in two versions , like the albums Neger Neger and Willkommen in Abschaumcity , also published in 2007 by Aggro Berlin . These were published as Standard and Premium Editions at the same time. The standard version consists of a compact disc on which 19 pieces of music can be heard. Two CDs, on the other hand, make up the Premium Edition. The first CD is identical to the Standard Edition. On the second disc of the Premium Edition there are seven more songs, as well as the video clip for the piece of music Totalschaden .

Guest Posts

Massive, the only on the Premium Edition is represented

Total write-off includes guest contributions from a large number of German rappers. All artists under contract with Aggro Berlin can be heard on the sound carrier. While Sido , B-Tight and Fler are represented on both versions, the only female performer of the label Kitty Kat delivers only two guest contributions for the second CD of the Premium Edition of Totalschaden . The Premium Edition also features the Sony BMG contracted Massiv , as well as half of the duo, your favorite rapper Harris .

The guest contribution by the hip-hop group KIZ deserves special mention, which entered the top 10 of the German album charts in 2007 with their album Hahnenkampf . The contribution of the group, which were under contract with the Royal Bunker label , met with astonishment, as Aggro Berlin and Royal Bunker have been fighting disputes for several years. With KIZ, an interpreter under contract with Royal Bunker can be heard on a release by Aggro Berlin for the first time.

KIZ, which can be heard on the song Come in

“We met on May 1st through mutual old friends. A common track was immediately discussed, but it was also clear that it wasn't about aggro vs. Bunker should go. We don't even mention that in the track. I like what they do and vice versa. It's a feature like any other, that's it. "

The song of the same name Totalschaden was released as a single from the album Totalschaden . This was released on August 31, 2007. On the single are six different versions of the piece Totalschaden , the accompanying video clip and the songs Wo sind die Gegnaz? and come in to hear it. The single was also released in a 2-track version.

A video clip was shot about total write-off . In this, the Totalschaden (Smells like Totalschaden) version, in which the song Smells Like Teen Spirit of the grunge band Nirvana is sampled, is played. Aggro Berlin later submitted a second version of the video in which a different version of the piece is played.

Musicians Sido, B-Tight and Evil Jared, the bassist of the Bloodhound Gang , play in the video . Sido plays the drums, B-tight guitar and Jared bass in the clip. Other protagonists who can be seen in the video clip are the rappers Frauenarzt, MC Bogy and Smoky .

“Right from the start we had the idea of making the video for“ Totalschaden ”with a band. With Sido it was clear that he should be the drummer because he can play the drums. B-Tight got the guitar because it suited him so well and we already knew Evil Jared over 2/3 corners, so we called him and he immediately said yes. He was there all day from morning to evening and had no starry air at all. It was really cool that he was there. "

The total loss video reached number 1 on the TRL Most Wanted charts of the MTV shows Urban TRL and the regular edition of the TRL program .

success

Total loss rose to number 21 in the German album charts in the 40th calendar week of 2007. The following week the album dropped to # 66. After two weeks, Tony D's debut album could not find another placement in the 100 best-selling albums of the week.

Total loss also reached positions in the album charts in Austria and Switzerland . Tony D rose to 78th place in Switzerland and 63rd in Austria in the list of the 100 best-selling albums of the week.

In contrast to the album Totalschaden , the single of the same name stayed in the German hit list for seven weeks. In the 38th calendar week, this rose to position 53. It then fell to position 72 and in the following weeks occupied positions 70, 78, 78, 85 and 93 of the 100 best-selling singles of the week. After the seventh week ended on November 4th, total write-offs could no longer achieve any further chart placement.

criticism

The reviews of total write- offs were mixed. The website Laut.de only gave the album two out of a possible five evaluation points. In Dani Fromm's explanation, the lack of variety is criticized, among other things. As positive aspects, the author picks up the beats of Tai Jason , which have an "aesthetic that once jingled on the nerves in John Carpenter's Halloween theme", as well as the design of the booklet:

“The only thing that adds a touch of diversity is the numerous feature guests who are recruited from the immediate and wider environment of the damager. When B-Tight launches a high-speed verse in […] “Where Are The Gegnaz?” That finally shows once again that Bobby Dick is not just a Negro but actually a rap acrobat […] then Tony looks D even paler from the leather jacket than already. "

Another rating that illustrates the polarizing effect of the album is the review by hip-hop magazine Juice . Due to the different views of the editorial team, total loss was rated in the Battle of the ear category and thus received two reviews. The author of the first review awarded Tony D's debut album 4.5 out of a possible 6 "crowns". In the justification Tony D is referred to as a "1A entertainer" who has a style that cannot be copied.

"When Tony D yells at the son of a bitch , it's honestly, far more exciting, funnier and more entertaining than the superimposed stories of some coke dealers from small German towns. Just do it and see what happens, that should have been the motto when recording this album. And this concept works completely. Simply switch off your head and turn up the system, should then also apply when listening to total write-offs . If you can't do that, you will probably go to the basement to laugh. On the way there, another tip: take total loss with you, maybe the spark will jump underground "

In the second review, total loss received only 2.5 out of 6 evaluation crowns.

"Limited to 16 lines [...] the damager can do a lot of good - but also destroy some good on an album. Over the full duration of 14 songs, his coarse roar is worse than the combinations “chalk-board”, “styrofoam-styrofoam” and “dental drill-caries” combined. The actually great staging of Tony D as a comic hero, including the Sin City booklet, doesn't help either: It's not funny and probably won't be. "

indexing

The Federal Testing Office for Media Harmful to Young People indicated total write-offs in November 2009. By being included in List A, the album may no longer be publicly advertised or sold to minors.
